There has been divided opinions on Tom all last season. Do people think he is in Nigel Pearson's plans? I think not though I am not sure why. I rate this lad so highly, I just hope he doesnt fall away to be an average CC or lower footballer. From what i know about him he was small at 16 and released by Leeds, he has sprung up now and seems to me to be the reason he lacks strength at the moment. My hunch is he will greatly improve either this season or next and be a premiership class player. Is he the type of player NP wants, I am not sure, if not where will be best for him?
Tom Cairney like many young footballers who do well in their first season don´t progress so well in their second season but the cream always rise to the top and I hope that Tom Cairney fits into this catagory. Perhaps his confidence took a knock playing in what was a struggling team in the first part of the season when perhaps too much was expected of him. Brown often mentioned that he had to improve on the defensive side of the game. Pearson likes players who can defend so perhaps if he shows improvement in pre season we may see him emerge into the player we believe he can be.
I really, really hope we don't let Cairney leave. I feel he has potential, he just needs to work on the defensive and physical sides of his game. When he turns it on Cairney has one of the best technical abilities in the Championship. Don't sell him Nige!
He was released by Leeds for been too slow not to small. I think he has tallent with the ball but is a passenger without it. Just about every player in the programme interviews has Tom down as the worst trainer and i think it shows. He likes his fancy hair dos and designer clothes and warms up like hes a superstar. I hope Barmby has a word in his ear about what it takes to be a pro player if Tom knuckles down and concentrates on been a player rather than just living the life of one. We ll have to see i hope he does though?
Cairneys like Cooper in the respect that he came through at a bad time with only the likes of Barmby and the Boat and Daws setting a good example to the young lads, these kids would rather be like Bullard and do **** all and live the high life and it wont be till later that they regret not working hard and having the right attitude.
I always had Tom Cairney down as a future star. I believe he has the class play at any level he wants. But thats all up to him. If he doesnt make it,then i think that would be a crying shame, but it would be his own fault ! Too many young players think they have achieved, just because they have a nice car and exspensive clothes.
I used to rate him, not anymore. He's too lightweight and he is an absolute nancy boy. He would get knocked off the ball by a rouge sandwich. Other than the odd good pass he is rubbish. I think all City fans over-rated him (along with Cooper and Cullen) because he was the only half decent academy player we had. He's a smug little twat as well (based on interviews), he thinks he's the next Gerrard, sadly he's mistaken. If he gets his head down and works hard in training for once, maybe he has a future here.
“I was with Leeds from the age of seven until I was 16, and then they released me for being too small,” Cairney said.
Interesting article, I've wondered for a while what's going to happen to him. He couldn't get into the midfield ahead of Harper and Evans last season who were a piss poor partnership, so God knows what hope he's going to have if we sign two more midfielders. There's no denying he's one of the best technical players we've got, and I've never understood the theory that he doesn't get back or get stuck in, he always seems to be getting into tackles to me, but if his team mates and manager are saying it then it'll be me that's wrong I suppose. He seems to be a victim of the modern game where strength, height, pace, effort, fitness and determination come first and someone who kicks ball accurately is known as a 'luxury player'.
I,m not sure Tom has the makings of a premier player, but he certainly hasnt reached his potential yet. He needs to put back on the shelf this "i,ve made it" image and concentrate on being the best he can possibly be, possibly with the help of some of the senior squad who must have seen other young lads with talent and opportunities, squandar it, in their careers.
He has no pace and he is also a lazy sod. I will never forget his terrible attitude when we got mauled at Millwall last season. He has talent when on the ball but needs to buck his adeas up if he wishes to make it at this level.
If Cairney has no strength, height, pace, effort, fitness or determination, it's no wonder he can't get in the team.
Well I wish it wasn't the case, football would be much more entertaining if technical players were used more. I have no time for 'effective' players such as Harper.
I'd play Cairney ahead of Harper, but then I'd play almost anyone ahead of Harper, I just think it's a shame that Tom has ability, but doesn't seem to have the application and desire to benefit from it.
I agreee with the majority of posts, he is a talented player but puts in minimum effort when not on the ball. Needs a good kick up the backside from one of the old pro's or NP
Why can't a player who can kick a ball accurately also have either strength or pace and put some effort in without being tired after 10 minutes? Barca don't rest on their ability to pass a ball, they harrass and chase the opposition from the front, and the best thing Beckham brought to the England team especially as captain was his workrate.
i agree about players with all workrate, and no technical ability like harper and ***an..and i have no time for them either....but that doesnt mean you should swap workrate for ability, you need both!...100% effort should be the bare minimum for any pro footballer...even lionel messi who if any player had the right to stand with his hands on his hips watching would be him, works his arse off when he loses the ball...
Some interesting views expressed, though how anyone can write him off at 20 is ridiculous. If he was released for been too small, pretty sure thats the consensus, then he will be growing into his frame this season and next. The comparison with Barcelona is also a tough one, though i am sure a 19 yr old Xavi or Iniesta wouldnt have done much in the CC. In fact they both didnt come into their own until their 21st yr in the Spanish league. My worry is TC is tainted in NP's eyes by being part of the last regime. There is no way on a level playing field Harper would have played as many games as he did. Therefore a young kid just been relegated needs to feel like he is wanted and part of the plans.
I hope to god he pulls his finger out and starts performing to a higher level. He's got immense quality on the ball for someone so young and I'm sure if he works hard in training and in the gym he'll be premier league class in no time. It'd be a waste of talent of the guy slipped into the lower leagues never to be seen again.
