Most of us will now look forward to 4 days holiday, TV,sopping, sport and school all change and we all enjoy Easter, but why? The official reason we have Easter is.. So, many don't have a religion so why have it? What have Easter eggs and Easter bunnies to do with it? Are we all hypocrites in thinking the reason is rubbish but we will take the perks anyway? Those who do believe will you go to church, just in case, but eat meat today anyway or will you follow the traditions, if so why? A nice easy debate for a Friday.
Aye the bible...a canny story made up by some clever fella.... For me, next week see's the start of the annual water festival, where everyone soaks each other for days, get pissed and hundred die every year in car and bike accidents...
Won't be going to church but won't be eating meat either. instead am taking advantage of the days holiday to catch up with family and having girls lunch out with sisters and niece
Religion, now there is a good debate for any day syd. Personally speaking (or typing) don't believe never have believed and probably never will believe, seen too much **** perpetuated in the name of various religious excuses sorry causes to even begin to believe there is a higher being somewhere in the cosmos. To all those who do believe that's fine I would never knock anyone for their beliefs (except the misguided fools of NE1 of course) but, if your God/Deity/Prophet is the one why do they not just knack all the non-believers? Well somebody perhaps need to give the other side... Faith is a strange thing and has facets to it as most on here could testify, KTF for a team that has not won nor looked liked winning anything for 40 years. Also I cannot accept the argument as with gun control that it is people not guns that kill people, if the guns were not there i.e. banned people could not pull the trigger. Religion does seem like a gun. Years ago before muslim terrorists were about (IRA murders were though) I knew a couple of Iranians (actually one very well but that is another story), they did not drink alcohol or swear etc and it seemed to me they were the most peaceable and respectful of others beliefs as possible. Now 30 years on look at what has happened the Jihad, so religion can be a force for good or a vehicle for suppression of liberty. Generally in the UK whether you went to Church or not most of our morals and ethics are somewhat Christian based, e.g. our dislike of cheats not winning at any cost. To a large extent what our understanding is about how we should treat other folk, stems from a story that is commemorated this weekend, as a Father allowed his only Son to be sacrificed, to take one for the team as it were.
Think you got the last one wrong mate he is the lowest member of the great fire club probably cleans the chief stokers shovel. Will give you the first two though Hallelujah I have seen the light.
I do actually have a faith, a strong one and one I don't push, talk about or care what others think about. Its mine and gives me comfort so its personal to me. I don't agree with people knocking on the door pushing their beliefs down your throat and I suppose my reasoning for this thread is how religious festivals have simply become commercial events. Not against it just thought it was worth talking about.
As you say mate happy to take the holidays or Holy Days as it was known but, it's amazing how many get religion when Easter or Christmas come around. Let the zealots have these holidays and the rest of us can have the others. Agree about people shoving it down your throat was in the Army where it was Church parades, scripture readers etc. etc. etc. even had an argument with a padre about religion in Ireland and my not too impressed look whilst singing Christmas Carols. By the way I go out of my way to eat meat on a Good Friday just to wind my mam up she is hyper religious, mmmmm surf and turf mate the way forward for us heathens.
her down the road is catholic and told me yesterday I must not eat meat today. I had a steak in for dinner last night but when she TOLD me the steak was put away, having it tonight, and I had fish and chips last night, sort of double kick.
Had Fish and Chips last night as well mate Green Lane Fish Shop fooking great. My mate is a left footer and he works in McDonalds so not sure how that works, mind you he isn't the most religious of blokes. Happy Easter mate and don't let Osca eat too much chocolate.
I would argue that as church attendances have dropped our society has become worse. There are kids roaming the streets today with no moral compass. I take my kids to church, only about once a month when it's family service. I had to go to Sunday school when I was little (not that my parents went to church). I do have faith, I do believe. Maybe not the full Christian way but faith none the less and I probably live my life by Christian values (or try to) most of us probably do without realising. I think it sad that Christianity seems to be a dying faith in this country, as the void will be filled with worse things IMO. It's easy to deride faiths and be cynical BUT there ain't no atheists in fox holes!
Think i know what your getting at CT, i live in a quite religious country and see the locals standing in the streets early morning to give the monks gifts of food etc... My little un goes to temples with her mum, while i stay in the car....So whilst i think it's all a crock of ****, i would not deprive the rest of the family their faith.
I've never really had an opinion on religion. Obviously, there has to be an explanation for the world, and the evolution theory, the most tangible for me, suggesting we grew from moss or similar, still doesn't explain where the matter we evolved from came from! I'm not, and never have been a church goer, although I was christened, but i'd never deride someone for having that faith. Re eating meat, well I didn't know that I wasn't meant to until I read this, and alas, it's too late, as i've already devoured a full English. Oh well.
