If ever we needed a moment of inspiration, a glimmer of hope, it is now! With 8 players on our books currently crippling us; and no compramise visable on the horizon, it looks like goodnight vienna for Pompey. However, 30 years ago, there was a club in a VERY similar situation to ourselves. The similarities are striking, and even more coincidentally is that the club facing these horrendous troubles were a team plying their trade in the South. http://www.bbc.co.uk/bristol/content/articles/2005/12/02/ashtongate8_feature.shtml Can our players save our club like those at Ashton Gate? Can they write their names in to our history books? Or, will they continue to drag their heels and push us over the brink. I hate to say it, but... I think we are only likely to have a legendary 5 - Kitson, Kanu and Ben Haim are the three likely to kill off our once proud club. Still, I have everything crossed that these players will have an emiphany in the very near future, and that we will have our very own "Ashton Gate 8" at Fratton. EDIT - Varney has signed for Leeds tonight (obviously agreeing a deal with the club). So, he is one of the 8, who is next to step up and help save the club?
well we are down to 7 tinght Jake.......and I am arranging a horses head for Kitson , he''l; be gone by mid next week! BP
You do know what those 8 got for their heroic gestures don't you Jake? 1 became a milkman, 1 became a postman - they all slipped straight into obscurity, apart from being known as the Ashton Gate 8. Hardly anyone even remembers their names. I love the way it's the players who are being villified, as though they are the ones who are causing the club all its problems. It was up to Birch to reach compromise agreements with them and he has spectacularly failed to do that. How about asking Chanrai to have an "epiphany" and come to a tasty deal with the PST? Bear in mind that the players signed their pledges to PST - for them they would probably do whatever it takes, yes even Ben Haim. For Chanrai they probably won't, knowing that what is owed to them will go straight into his pocket.
