The forgotten men. We can just about build a team out of forgotten players Gordon, Killgallon, Angeleri, Riveros, Meyler, Campbell, Gyan, McClean, The above are all players who are on our books but have either been injured, were not played by Bruce or are out on loan. It makes you wonder if Mon can do what he has done with Killgallon and McClean, could the others have a big future with us? Do we really need to sign anyone or would it be more sensible to hang on until the summer and give the lads currently signed a chance to prove themselves. To me we seem to have a hell of a lot of players on our books, I say we give them a chance or we need to get rid of them ASAP to save wages for replacements.
The manager has already stated that he want's to asses all the players at his disposal before he makes his mind up which is great imo.
Good post, Vegas. And I think Billy's right - MON's clean slates is the right way to go. When you look at McClean and Kilgallon this last couple of weeks, it's obvious something wasn't right inside the club before. We can't judge any player by what happened pre-MON in my view. So which of that list would we want to get rid of? Two World Cup quarter-finalists? A part of Argentina's World Cup squad who only missed going to Africa through injury? The man reckoned to be Britain's best goalkeeper when we signed him? The ideal cover for Catts when injured or suspended? Campbell, who can not only play as a striker, but is also good wing cover for Larsson (I remember him playing a blinder on the right wing against Villa in the Carling Cup)? I'd like to see all of those players fit and/or recalled whenever possible and given a fair chance. Every single one of them can add something to a squad that's already looking pretty handy. Sod signing expensive risks. We've no need.
Totally agree with cuteybuns..we have no need for expensive signings in January...our squad is good enough to see us through to the end of the season. We now have a manager who knows what he is doing!
Really want to see Angeleri given a chance I feel sorry for the lad He was linked with a big move to Europe with Mourinho's Inter interested then he suffere a really bad injury which has hampered his career since. When he signed the bbc's south american correspondent was raving about the lad so the lad must have something. Since he has been with us though he has never been fully fit, firstly suffering the injury against Benfica in the friendly and has since had a couple of more ops since then. I feel sorry for the lad, uprooting his family and moving halfway around the world where the culture is completely different, he must be fed up, footballer or not. I would love to see the lad given a chance by MoN and hopefully we can see the real Angeleri
I would be really interested in seeing what he could do with Riveros. I heard an interview with Tim Vickery last season in which he was bemoaning the fact that South American players don't seem to be making the grade in the EPL - the player he cited was Riveros saying that he had been absolutely convinced that Riveros would be a star for us and simply could not understand why he was clearly struggling. In the short time MON has been here we have seen that him and Walford seem to be getting the best out of everybody in the squad so imagine what he could do with those players who so far have not lived up to their reputations.
Tim Vickery's knowledge of the South American scene is encyclopaedic! But when a lad moves to the other side of the world where there's an entirely different footballing culture, and all he gets is about four games in a season, how can anybody be expected to shine? I'm with you, mate. I want this lad home from Turkey as fast as possible and given a fair chance. Because he sure as hell didn't get one last year. Incidentally poolie, the BBC correspondent for S. America is Tim Vickery, and if he was raving about Angeleri (and Diego Marardona just happened to agree) I'd be inclined to believe it. I share your sympathy for the lad, and hope that knee is sorted soon.
