Does anybody know why this area in Donegal was chosen as the place to cut the first sod for the new Celtic pitch? Was it because so many of the Irish that went to Scotland were from Donegal or is there some other reason for chosing this particular area? http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/Celtic Park - First Turf of Grass
It wasn't chosen, they offered it. The Rosses CSC wrote to Celtic and offered it to the new Celtic Park. Fergus phoned up personally to accept the offer.
Fergus certainly knew his stuff - what a tribute to and honour for, both the historic and current Irish connection with the club...a wonderful touch. "On alien soil like yourself I am here; I'll take root and flourish, of that never fear; And though I'll be crossed sore and oft by the foes, You'll find me as hardy as Thistle or Rose. If model is needed on your own pitch you'll have it." Thankfully, the most recent sod hasn't been stolen like it's predecessor - possibly because the curse worked! ("The curse of Cromwell blast the hand that stole the sod that Michael cut; May all his praties turn to sand - the crawling, thieving scut"!)
Michael Davitt campaigner for the poor and against people bullying, although a Native of Mayo was exceptionally well known and liked by people in both Donegal and Glasgow.
