Former England and Birmingham striker Trevor Francis is recovering in Birmingham Heartlands Hospital after a suspected heart attack. The 57-year-old was the first player in British football to be transferred for £1m when he joined Nottingham Forest from Birmingham in 1979. Francis, who won two European Cups with Forest, returned to Birmingham as manager between 1996-2001. A Blues statement read: "We'd like to wish Trevor a speedy recovery." Francis, who won 52 England caps and scored 12 international goals, spent two years with Forest before joining Manchester City, and then had spells with Italian clubs Sampdoria and Atalanta. ...................................................... Who was SAFC first £1m player?
It amazes me to see sportsmen and retired sportsmen getting heart attacks at a young age, then you get the likes of me,overweight, no exercise, lived live to excess for too long and with angina and diabetes but no hospital stays since age 11 and no real scares. Hope he is well soon.
get well soon trevor, great player, absolutely brilliant, remember his diving header in the european cup final for forest against malmo, commentator brian moore nearly had a heart attack
Bloody hell, I can remember that deal as if it were yesterday. I was a precocious 13 year old teenage nightmare and football was real Hollywood stuff with a million quid being paid for a player. Actually, officially he isn't the first £1m player. I think it was something like £1 under by Cloughies insistence, to stop Francis becoming big headed about it or carrying the stigma that the fee would carry, as he was a very young lad. I remember sitting watching the European cup final and he came on and scored the winning goal in that final. Brilliant stuff. Get well soon Trevor.
