I read an interesting book recently that touched on the mentality of these 'the end of the world is nigh' type nutters. After the date passes and nothing happens, a lot of them will realise they've been idiots and return to normality. However, a lot of them buy into the belief even stronger afterwards. They've invested so much of themselves into the myth, often selling off all their worldly possessions, that they can't be seen to be wrong. They have to sub-consciously rationalize their nutty behaviour so that they don't look like idiots to themselves and others. They therefore concoct some fantasy that God's saved them because they believed so strongly, and their delusion lives on despite the facts that proved them so spectacularly wrong.

The world possibly will end in environmental collapse one day -albeit not quite so dramatically; ironically, religionists who tell us that only 'we' have a soul, therefore they set the great apes apart from nature, thus placing divinity between cause and consequence.

Without doubt this planet will cease to be and some poor buggers will be here to witness it. Everything is so finely balanced to Earth revolving at the right speed and at the right distance from the Sun. Similarly the Moon around the Earth. In addition a collision could occur at any time. These finely tuned natural phenomena cannot continue indefinitely and the unpredictable can happen at any time (can't argue with that). I expect technology to improve to the point where space travel will permit the location of a new "paradise" to enable a painless migration. But how can that be achieved? Failure to plan for it will result in panic and horrible deaths for the earth's inhabitants. I suspect those chosen to survive (scientists, doctors, animals, vets etc etc) will be off in their space ships long before the End. Maybe it will be DNA that is taken forward to the next Planet. Now there's an idea; everyone who wants to go gives a sample of their DNA and gets transferred to the new Planet. Freaky.

So some crackpot thinks tonight's the night. See you tomorrow.

I'm a Christian and these guys are seen as idiots by 99% of Christians.

They claim they read the Bible and got this prediction from there but if you read Matthew 24:35-37 & Mark 13:32, Jesus says that no-one knows the hour that the world will end, except for God.

"Followers of an evangelical broadcaster who declared that Saturday would be Judgement Day are trying to make sense of the failed prediction.

Some believers expressed bewilderment or said it was a test from God of their faith, after the day passed without event.

Meanwhile, the evangelist at the centre of the claim, Harold Camping, has not been seen since before the deadline."

I understand he was beamed up and we only think we are still here. We are obviously somewhere else but it does seem very much like where we were before.

Maybe the world did end and this is some sort of Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes "reality" we're all living in.

As long as heaven is a pub I'll die happy <ok>
