The Netherlands’ head coach, Louis van Gaal, has said it is “ridiculous” that the 2022 men’s World Cup is being played in Qatar, claiming the decision to hold the tournament there is “about money [and] commercial interests”.

Speaking at a press conference before home friendlies against Denmark on Saturday and Germany next Tuesday, Van Gaal was asked his opinion on the Middle Eastern country hosting the finals, which will take place from 21 November to 18 December.

“Now, everybody knows that I find that ridiculous,” said Van Gaal, whose Dutch side have qualified for the finals after missing the 2018 tournament. “It’s ridiculous that we are going to play in a country – how does Fifa say it? To develop the football there. That is bullshit. But it doesn’t matter – it’s about money, commercial interests. That’s the main motive of Fifa.

Thats exactly what I said. He talks **** but it wont stop him playing!
    All virtue signalling bollocks.
The best way to highlight the human rights tragedies would be for all of the national FA's to boycott the tournament and not send their teams there to compete.
That would send the strongest message, not empty ****ing bullshit statements about how horrific Qatar is, while you fill their coffers by competing there in the worlds most popular sports competition.

The 'spin' given when the Qatari bid won was that through the unifying embrace of sport, the country would step closer to the modern norm and reforms would happen almost by default if not by pressure.

    That was in 2010.

Qatar has had 12 years to show even an inkling of initiative in terms of producing reform and righting some very serious and very obvious wrongs.

The last world cup was in Russia and look how that 'unifying embrace' has worked out.

Might as well give the next one to North Korea. At least that might produce some jobs and raise people out of poverty.
