Boris is under no pressure at all. He was given a massive majority by the electorate at the General Election so can do what he wants. the UK has the government it deserves.
Its amazing Swanny. Completed in 1913 to commemorate the victory of Russia-Prussia-Sweden-Austria over Napoloen's army 100 years earlier. Its size is simply overwhelming but the inner crypt is very humbling and beautifully wrought.
A very interesting piece of history, Oddy. I am sure the Napoleonic Wars were part of my History curriculum in the old School Cert. Managed a Credit in History somehow, but seem to have forgotten a lot about the Napoleonic era. The War of the 6th Coalition should have put old Napoleon to bed for good, but I believe he escaped from Elba and started the War of the 7th Coalition, which he finally lost and was then imprisoned on St. Helena, I believe. Thanks very much for the clip, now I know what this giant monument commemorated, brought back a lot of memories! Old memory refreshed by Wikipedia of course!
I can heartily recommend the Simon Scarrow books about Napoleon and Wellington - history in a page-turning novel style. Very good.
Silly me. I listened to about three-quarters of the the Presidential debate. What a disaster, absolutely chaotic. Both yelling at each other, moderator completely unable to control the two, especially Trump. Biden at least tried to talk to the American people watching and listening, and did not make any of his usual gaffs. Does have a slight stutter problem occasionally. Trump just continued interrupting and yelling. More often than not all three were yelling at the same time. A disaster. No more for me, thank you very much. Back to the sack, which I should have done 2-hours ago!
I continue to be fascinated by this massive monument. Strangely, it reminds me of the Buddhist temples in Thailand. On one occasion my Wife and I climbed to the top of Wat Arun in Bangkok. Next day we could barely walk with severe cramps in the lower legs!
Some film from 2009 showing the hunger of the sea. At about 10:30am, the 30 foot yacht Serenity, with two Norwegian sailors aboard, sent out a distress call saying their vessel was taking water due to a breach in the hull. The fishing boat in the film, the Budding Rose, took the call and relayed it to the Shetland Coastguard who immediately dispatched a chopper. The fishing boat secured the yacht by line but it soon snapped. The skipper chose to not place any of his crew aboard the yacht due to the dangers involved. The two Norwegians were air lifted to safety without injury. It's sad to see a vessel sink though.
A few years back I was returning from England on the fast ferry. However it turned out not to be so fast because the channel was pretty rough that night and a small yacht was in distress and our ferry had to be diverted to the rescue. The ferry pulled up nearby and shielded the yacht until a helicopter came along and lifted the two occupants up. Needless to say, I was late home that night. That is about as exciting as it's been on my ferry trips. There was another where two immigrants were marched into one of the cabins. The French chief steward, when I asked, told me I was better off not knowing But I walked back with the English customs people who marched them in and they were quite happy to tell me
With 750 new cases reported today at Northumbria University the policy to send the students back to University begins to look the right one
Surely the fact that the White House delayed the reporting of the Aide's positive test for 24 hours is the worst part of this.
