The day has finally arrived! Will the heavily backed Wonder from Downunder have the fire power to see off the cream of the Northern Hemisphere's horse flesh, and by doing so, vindicate the decision of his owners to take a crack at arguably, the most prestigious, open 12f race on the planet? They had every chance to take the easier option of a shorter program, which would have probably cemented So You Think as the premier 10f horse in the world. But much to their credit, they have decided to roll the dice in the grandaddy of all crap shoots.

In an age where all kinds of finger point is directed at owners and trainers for ducking a clash with a decent horse, or risking a horse's record by racing on a less than ideal surface, hats must be doffed to Coolmore for their decision to place So You Think in the firing line today. In reality though, irrespective of what the horse does this afternoon at Longchamps, he has already cemented his place in the breeding world. The very fact that Coolmore paid so much for the animal, assures that he will be covering some of their best mares. Whether he has what it takes to become a super sire, who knows. From a personal point of view, it would warm my heart, but if not ... then not too many will give a Billy Buck. For as far as a lot of people are concerned, the monoliths like Coolmore and Godolphin are just greedy bastards who have little regard for anyone but themselves. It's a position that holds some water. But again, well done Coolmore for their decision to climb into the ring for the heavyweight clash, against the best in the game at the moment.

In fairness to Coolmore, they have been willing to take risks in the past. Remember when they pitched High Chaparral and Hawk Wing against each other in the 2002 Derby? I doubt that any other operation would have done something like that. They also weren't afraid to run the likes of Galileo in the Breeders Cup Classic, despite easier pickings for them in the BC Turf. Then again, I'm kind of surprised that Coolmore didn't run So You Think in this year's July Cup - given their perennial penchant for thinking that most of their top milers/middle distance horses would be perfectly capable of winning the aforementioned race <laugh>
