Here I am bored at work thinking about the day I became addicted to a drug more powerful than heroin the drug in question being Charlton Athletic

The first ever game I went to see was at sh**thole Park the mighty Liverpool were the visitors that evening and we got spanked 4 - 0 a Ronny Rosenthal hatrick and John Barnes getting the 4th my lasting memory of the match was when a Liverpool fan invaded the pitch being chased by a few police officers the police officers slipping over and the fans around me shouting for the police to let him go I remember laughing along with the fans around me not really understanding what was happening

From that moment onwards I was hooked living and breathing the Charlton Athletic brand we have had many ups and a few downs since then!

What was the first game that you all remember that also left you all hooked to this very powerful drug

    Charlton 0 - 3 QPR.
A league cup replay, Stan Bowles scored for them. 1975 I think.

Charlton v Forest in 1987 at Selhurst. Think it may have been first home game of that season but I may be wrong...

My dad took me and my bro. I don't remember the score but me & my bro have been addicted ever since.

Charlton 2 Grimsby 0. Our first match after relegation from the old Div One. Stuart Leary curled the ball in direct from a corner. I left feeling disappointed we hadn't won 6-0. I was young and stupid and expected us to bounce straight back to the top level. It turned out to be a somewhat longer wait than expected.

Now I am old, but still stupid, and and expect us to do a "Norwich" and get back-to-back promotions.

    Remember that game well FHB.
Dave Thomas scored as well as ball burst after he shot - was a great goal swerved miles!
They were top of the old Div 1 too.
Great side - Parkes, Frank McClintock, Gerry Francis, Stan Bowles, Don Givens - boy those boys could play.
Went to the first game @ QPR think was 1-1 - did killer score, cant remember.

Think my first game was 68 vs Arsenal in FACup at Highbury.
Sure we must have lost as I always remember supporting the underdog - and ever since

My first game was Grimsby too Eddie.

I think it was 1996, after the Euros drew me in.

Can't remember anything about it except it was freezing and dark, they had Clive Mendonca up front, and it was Mark Robson's comeback (he was my first favourite consequentally)

    Does anyone recall this game??

I think my 1st game was in either 94 or 95. I'm pretty sure it was Port Vale at The Valley and we beat them 1-0. I was only 2 or 3 at the time so I don't remember hardly anything at all

    great thread...nice 1 sidcup

i have a mildly interesting story.

so i was born in 81 and as with many youngers with no family influence into choosing, i picked liverpool to follow. 1st 2 games i remember watching on tele were the cup final v wimbledon and the 2-0 defeat to arsenal loosing the league in last minute. so think someone was trying to tell me something.

so my old man said i had to pick a local team as he wasnt driving to liverpool for a game. so 1st live game i ever went to was England B v Yugoslavia B in 1990. my dad took one look at the Den and wasnt having any of it.

then went to a charlton open day at Sparrows Lane. club was friendly and welcoming. hooked..1st live game 1-0 lose v sheff wed at selhurst. colin walsh scored avalid goal which bounced over the line but wasnt given. typical!

safe to say, 1000 odd games later----glad i made the right choice!

I did the same as you calydon, I chose to 'support' Liverpool and Manchester United (I know!) when I first got into football 10 years ago.

My first Charlton game was the opening day of the 2002-3 season, a 3-2 defeat against Celsea at The Valley, Konchesky was sent off and Charlton went 2-0 up before losing. I wasn't immediately hooked, but I went a few more times in the next 2 or 3 years and eventually decided to throw in my lot with the Addicks, just in time for one of the worst periods in the club's history.

yeah i saw that one...absolutely gutted. almost as bad as the spurs game, when we played like Brazil for 40 mins, 2-0 and then murphy decided to start playing for spurs after half time. still, Darren09 was unplayable that day

My first game was in Sept 1956 when at the age of 6 my dad took me to The Valley. Thtis I was 6 not my dad.

It was against Sheffiled Wednesday and the score was 4-4. Sheffield scored first and I cheered, and got clumped and re-directed. Jimmy Gauld scored two or three that day. he became MY HERO.

later he became a tarnised hero done for organising the match rigging, iroonically involving Wednesday players Swan and 'Bronco Lane' plus a player they sold to Everton.

Charlton had lost five on the bounce I think when that game was played.

Houndal, Charlton lost 2-0 at Highbury in your first game. I thought we had equalised as Matt Tees scored from a corner but it bounced out and George Armstrong raced up our end to score a second. Bob Wilson later said Tees' effort had crossed the line, much later, sadly after the game. Honest, you decide.

I also remember FHB jnr's first game :
    Charlton 2-1 Walasall
Andy Hunt and Graeme Stuart scored for us and we went on to win the Championship. I told him a few times it wouldn't always be like this but I don't think he really believed me. He does now.
I also remember the first ever football game I went to:
    Kilmarnock 0-0 Celtic 1957
And the first ever game I took my younger brother to:
    Kilmarnock reserves 3-0 Dunfermline reserves!

Thats a good shout FHB I dont have any kids but their first game is one that would stick in my mind

which gets me thinking about games that really made you leave the Valley with a big grin on your face im leaving out the play off final because that would be to easy

Mine is beck in 2000 Manchester United we took the lead after 10 mins but found ourselves 1-3 down with 10 mins to go Fergie thinks he has the points in the bag and makes a couple of subs we then score two goals with my Fav player at the time Robinson getting the equaliser I still believe if the game had gone on for another 5mins we would have got the winner
