The Daily Thread -- Notable Events from History! A place for random ejaculations! To 'appease the Greez', I'll now post the daily birthdays / events from history / famous deaths here -- when I remember that is! I'd like to invite Dribs to do the same, if he likes. Admittedly, this might just be a tumbleweed of a thread, with probably just me posting here -- or me and Dribs at a push -- but it will free up the Carra arms for more random pub-like things.

Today in 1896, Emma Darwin (nee Wedgwood, of pottery fame) passed away having survived the death of her husband Charles Robert Darwin by 14 years. Emma was Charles' first cousin and he worried about the affect of their close kinship on the strength of their children (10 born, 3 died in infancy), long before Mendelian genetics came to light (despite it being worked on by Gregor Mendel around that time hardly anyone was aware of this work!). Emma was also a devout Unitarian Christian. Her belief in life after death was staunch and unwavering. Darwin's evolving atheism (agnosticism in name only) was a constant issue between the loving couple. As an older Darwin (he was training to be a priest at one point in his youth) once noted about Christianity: The fascinating relationship between the two was portrayed by real-life couple Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany in the 2009 film Creation.
1988 - Robin Givens files for divorce after 8-month marriage to Mike Tyson 2004 - Actress Andie MacDowell (46) divorces businessman Rhett Hartzog (45) after nearly three years of marriage
This reds birthday will be very notable. Liverpool FC fan Betty Musker turns 104 this month - and is set to receive more than 4,000 birthday cards from around the world after a campaign to make the pensioner’s birthday the best yet. Betty left her beloved Liverpool 10 years ago so she could live closer to family who could help care for her, but still manages to watch every Reds game. Lorraine Marshall, one of Betty’s carers in Warrington, said: “I can’t bear football, but she’s Reds mad. “She watches every game, she even watched the whole world cup. She’s football crazy.” “She’s a lovely, lovely lady, and she loves her hometown of Liverpool.” The widowed great-great-grandmother told carers that she didn’t think she’d get many cards this year, as “most of her friends are dead”. please log in to view this image But more than 4,000 cards from as far as Singapore have descended on the North Warrington care home - where the plucky pensioner even runs an exercise class once a week. Ms Marshall started the campaign with Betty’s family and has been inundated with cards from all over the world, with more than two weeks still to go. She said: “Betty has made cards all her life, and when I asked her what she wanted for her birthday, she said ‘just a nice card, I love cards’, and that’s how the seed was planted. “She’s completely with it, she knows everything that’s going on. But she’ll be very surprised when she gets all these cards on her birthday.” Last year, Betty still managed to get an impressive 70 cards, but according to carers has no idea the extent of the campaign meaning a big surprise is in store in 18 days time when she turns a whopping 104. Betty is originally from Scotland Road, but the last place she lived in Liverpool was in a 15th floor flat on Sheil Road, causing her grandchildren to refer to her as the “granny that lived in the sky.” Delighted staff at the Golborne House care home in North Warrington are counting up the cards, as at least 200 arrive every day. The Facebook page, ‘For the love of Betty Musker’, has had over 16,000 Facebook shares as the grandma becomes an internet sensation. Dedicated posties have even been delivering cards to Betty that simply say her name, and that she lives in Warrington. If you want to send birthday wishes to the amazing great-great-grandma, send them to: Betty Musker, Golborne House, Derby Road, Golborne, Nr Warrington, WA3 3JL England

Is Sig Weaver really that old? Frank Herbert's birthday too... time to get the old sand worm out I guess. Chevvy Chase- some great films and some awful ones! Never an average one. Jesse Jackson- bloody racist! Martin Luther King did such wonderful things for people in America- shame there are flippin' racists like Jesse that go around pretending to carry on his mission when really they're just hate-filled scum trying to bring down anyone who is a different race than themselves. MLK no doubt rolls in his grave everytime Jesse Jackson speaks.
Re: Betty Musker she lives in Warrington- wonder if she is one of the regulars at the Cheese? RHC, do you recall seeing any century old women at the cheese?
