Stranger things have happened with players this season..... hell maybe HBA has a role....... (cue the food gags).

    http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/spor...ws/could-sylvain-marveaux-extra-time-8115222?

Newcastle United cut the winger adrift, but his form at Guingamp has been good and he might work in the new system devised by Alan Pardew

Of all the first-teamers shipped out by Alan Pardew as part of Newcastle United’s summer bloodletting, Sylvain Marveaux was the one whose departure caused the lightest ripple.

Hatem Ben Arfa’s profile and previous made him the earthquake exit, while the quality of the club snapping off Newcastle’s hands for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa made that move more noteworthy.

His distinguished performance against Manchester City, when Newcastle were struggling, briefly made him a black-and-white cause celebre.

Marveaux, meanwhile, has got on with his work in Ligue 1 and the Europa League. Transformed from an unloved bit-part player at St James’ Park to the star man at Guingamp, he seems to have really thrived.

It is an impression confirmed by So Foot journalist and Guingamp supporter Regis Delanoe.

“It has been really positive. I am a fan of Guingamp but to be honest, he deserves to play at a better club,” he told me this week.

“When he arrived, he had a reputation of a very fragile player, with many injuries (not quite Abou Diaby but still). But the truth is that he is one of the players who has played the most at Guingamp since the beginning of the season. I have been very impressed with the quality of his pass.”

Interestingly, Marveaux has not played once as a winger. Instead he’s played as a playmaker, through the middle in a 4-2-3-1 or a4-3-3, a role he rarely – if ever – played at Newcastle.

“That seems to be his best position, he’s physically too light to be a winger,” Delanoe says.

With his contract up, Ben Arfa’s time at Newcastle has come and gone. There is no way that Yanga-Mbiwa will be back either, given the fact a deal with Roma has already been agreed.

Marveaux, though, might just be a possible. His Newcastle deal – he is far from the best paid player at the club – extends until 2016 and Guingamp won’t be re-signing him. United need a player who can play in the role he inhabits.

In these days of second chances for the likes of Mehdi Abeid and Sammy Ameobi, might there be time remaining on Marveaux’s Newcastle career? It’s worth considering.

    He's still on our books?

I was really excited about Marv, especially after watching him away at Hartlepool pre-season a couple of years back, where he was the stand-out player, talent he showed in flashes during brief flirtations with the first team. Another of those ones where we'll never know what happened. Certainly performed no worse than Cabella when given minutes, but was just catapulted into the void for months and months on end.

No thanks. Just very lightweight and too much of a luxury like HBA. Like HBA he has talent. The easy going pace of Ligue 1 is not putting pressure on his fragility or his lack of work rate. The PL does not accommodate players who do not work. Abeid, Sammy, Obertan all have had this in their favour. To be fair Pardew never wrote off either Abeid or Sammy, he just didn't feel they were ready and was correct. Obertan - well I have to be fair here, I wrote off old big heed completely. Indeed I can't think of anyone who didn't!

I have it on very good authority that The Mekon did't write Obertron off.

Obertan was **** for years and has had a few decent games so everyone was correct in righting him off and the jury is still out on him anyway. If he can seemingly come back from the brink I'm sure Marv can.
