( A tribute in these high flying times) `Tis a thing of beauty The wee canary bird, When on a spell of duty Its joyous song is heard, What a sight to behold Most colourful in flight, But also it hides untold Resources for the fight, Adaptable it is too When faced with different foes, Smart and quick to see through The threat that they may pose, Shining golden yellow He sticks out in a crowd, And despite size, this fellow Has reason to be proud, High up in the airways With larger birds en bloc, You might see him on clear days Amongst the leading flock, Fearless as he flies there He really looks the part, And up there where the sky´s clear He´s happy as a lark, Forget the age-old practice When he was down in mines, Right now the simple fact is These are high flying times, And with his new found stature There´s no telling how long, He´ll continue to enrapture Those who just love his song. Hi RBF bor, a word of warning. Heard their is a fox prowling around our birdcage. Mind you, Ol' Reynard's brush would not look amiss hanging on our trophy wall ?
Have you kept a record of all your poems RBF? We need to see about getting them published. Submit them for the Montreal Poetry Prize and theres a few bob in it.
Hi RBF- when are you going to stop hiding your light under a bushel? My word, but you just get better and better! Lovely poem, lovely sentiments
You´re all very kind, overwhelmingly so, and redruth, I can promise you I´ve not thrown any away, just got to find them that´s all, but the only aim I´ve ever had with writing these, is purely as entertainment and enjoyment for us all, and as much as collecting a few together and trying to get them published has crossed my mind too, I´m just not sure it´s worth the hassle, that is, even if someone was prepared to publish them. The virtue, and at the same time, the weakness of them, is their spontaneity, could be that I´m wrong, but I tend to think that once that´s gone, they also lose their interest.
Your spontaneity is incredible and something to be envied. The great thing about poetry is that you can keep going back to it. Maybe one or two about individual games or moments could bring back treasured memories in years to come. I enjoy writing prose but keep it personal and write about my family only and only let them read it. Publishing is easier nowadays. A friend of ours had a single book published regarding the friendship between his wife and mine and contained colour pictures and text of many of the races they have run together both home and overseas.
