I think McClaren did well at the Boro and obviously at FC Twente. As you say he is well thought of as a coach and he was on a hiding to nothing going to Forest.
I have never rated McClaren and was extremely surprised how well he did at FC Twente. A good coach but never a manager. The England team always flatters to deceive, I think they beleive their own press TBH.
We know first hand about managers being able to perform well on limited budgets but in my opinion these pair can't cut it in the championship. It'll be interesting to see who replaces McClaren as they will have the same restrictions imposed on them.

i'm really surprised mcclaren decided on going to the championship, especially only a year after leaving twente when he had the pick of a number of jobs in the bundesliga (hamburg and wolfsburg) as well as interest from turkey and portugal. now that he's failed at forest its hard to see anyone with ambition in the championship touching him with a bargepole let alone the premiership and thats a shame as he clearly is a good manager, he's just picked his last 2 jobs poorly. i reckon he'll go back to holland tbh, in hindsight he left twente too early, he could have managed them in the CL, he would have been one of a select few to do that alone with redknapp.
