I am considering the following bets: F & M Turf - Sistercharlie to win. Turf - Channel Maker each way Mile - Oscar Performance to win Classic - Catholic Boy and/or McKinzie to win
All season I have championed THE MACKEM BULLET[ 8.00 tonight] I am not going to desert her now. I have had £100 to win at 14/1 - more I have to say- in hope rather than in confidence. First she is attempting a mile for the first time , a trip that I have always felt that she has been crying out for but,of more interest, is the fact that she will encounter soft ground for the first time, and I believe that this could be a big plus. Her sire Society Rock won the group 1 Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot in ground that was described as 'heavy' and I expect that she will be just as well suited. As far as form goes she is the second best filly in Europe on ratings at 111, only Fairyland is better, so it is hard to fathom why East who is drawn in the car park, and whose maiden win is not working out should be at a similar price, similarly why is Just Wonderful [who I believe is a dog] second favourite, when through a line with Fairyland cannot beat the bullet. The favourite looks good - she can run - but can she race? I have watched replays of her two races and they were bloodless wins and learned nothing about racing. The real worry I have regards the track, which is like Wolverhampton but just 7 furlongs round, and for a big filly with a decent stride there is a possibility that she could get unbalanced - secondly stall 2 could be a problem if she starts slowly. A fast start is imperative on American tracks,as is the ability to travel in the race. She will get every assistance from the saddle from a jockey who has won 9 group 1 races this season, so with luck in running I am hopeful for a big run from her.
I hope your reading of the European form is accurate as, as you have stated, the US favourite (Newspaperofrecord) looks something special. The American lady on I think 'Racing Uk' (might have been ATR) stated that the other American juvenile turf fillies have been running scared of her. Good luck!
I had four American horses in my notebook with a view to the Breeders’ Cup meeting and I cannot say that I am too surprised to find that three of them are favourites with the British bookies (and presumably, therefore, the American layers). On Friday in the Juvenile Fillies (20:40 GMT), Simon Callaghan’s Bellafina is favoured to add to her tally. I saw her win the Del Mar Debutante on her penultimate start and she ought to take some beating; however, she has been done no favours drawn widest of the 10. On Saturday in the Sprint (18:46), Imperial Hint is 9/5 favourite and it does not take a rocket scientist to figure that one out after a very easy win at Belmont last time in the Vosburgh Stakes. He was beaten in this last year by Roy H and that one is obviously the main danger if the ground stays fast. I have no doubt that in the Turf races British punters will latch on to the European runners as we have a good record in them. The favourite Polydream scratched the Mile (19:36)may see Woodbine Mile winner OSCAR PERFORMANCE sent off favourite to repel the foreign challenge and keep the money at home. If the ground eases up too much, that would be against him. There has been quite a bit of interest in the European contingent in the Classic (21:44) and whilst on paper Roaring Lion is the best of them, the weather forecast tempers any enthusiasm for his chances; whilst the Ballydoyle contenders still have something to find and there has to be a concern that Mendelssohn may simply not like the track. Godolphin’s Thunder Snow has racked up some air miles this term but he was beaten in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont last time by Discreet Lover, (Mendelssohn third) who is three times the price with the British layers. I have been in a couple of the British bookies to enquire about putting bets on at the US ‘Tote’ odds but it seems they will only accept odds at their prices; doubtless to stop each-way thieves from getting twice the odds about British runners that will be virtually friendless on the local system.
If there is some kind of celestial being looking down on us then surely Well Done Fox wins the first. COMP £1000 win NEWSPAPEROFRECORD 6/4 8.00 She is a beast!
