Cannot be right, we are always being told we are no good at sports <laugh>

Just looking at the football table there appears to be some huge errors - I know they are not of your making...

    Holland above Spain?
    England above Brazil??

I know the ranking for South American teams are also taken from the Copa America etc but England cannot really be 4th in the world with our record over the last 8 or so years!

Holland are no 1 now apparently

This interesting reading wonky, suprised china aren't higher but I guess that is down to the sample size

I thought from the title of the thread it was going to be a moan about the international break, rather than trying to fill it with some discusssion, well done

The link provided by this initially produced a document explaining how the rankings were worked out, but it appears to be broken.

Thanks Max! I guess it came down to my selection of sports. Had I chosen baseball, gymnastics, basketballor hockey the results may have been different.

Just noticed a problem. The athletics and swimming ratings contain results from the womens' events, while the rest only involve the men. I will look at this and change it accordingly.

UPDATED AFTER 2011 WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP

First, I don't know how to delete the previous post (sorry about that).

Some of you know that I like my statistics, as I have posted in the past. Now that there is no domestic football for two weeks and we are into the international break I thought I would look at international sport.

I have looked at the top 10 ranked nations for a range of sports, assigning points relating to their rank - 10 points for world number one to 1 point for world number 10 - and added them together to create a top ten ranking of all sports.

This may give an indication as to the country that is the most versatile amongst the sports. I have not included all sports as the sports below already took a while to put together. These are probably the most popular sports so sorry if you feel that I have missed out a certain sport.

Obviously there are some flaws, which I have tried to avoid. One in particular is competing as one nation or a group of nations such as the UK. I have altered this by awarding the same number of points to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The overall ranking is obviously not 100% reliable and is just a bit of fun!

We spoke about the FIFA rankings the other day, I know they more an indication of form but we're **** at football, struggling to be in top 10 if you ask me.

Yeah, just created a new thread and added the women's sport to avoid the inconsistencies.

There's a certain formula used to calculate the FIFA rankings, as explained by this - http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/fifafacts/rawrank/ip-590_10e_wrpointcalculation_8771.pdf. If CONCACAF was stronger then Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay would be much higher. The 'strength' of UEFA probably explains why there are four European teams making up the first four.

Never realised that the associations had an effect on the Rankings. I'm surprised FIFA have us as 4th, was having a cigarette break earlier and read on the Sky Sports app, that Blatter has accused the FA of trying to sabotage FIFA because we want control over it.
