It sounds to me that you left school with few qualifications and are now trying to make up for it by reading a multitude of 'intellectual' books. Am I right Mick?
I first started to turn into a heavy reader a few years back when I moved to Guernsey and was doing 7-8 hour commutes. I was reading mostly the business and crappy self help books that they sell in airport WH Smiths, trying to figure out what I missed by not going to University, and also trying to figure out how to get further ahead in my career. Most of what I read now is for fun (or more precisely to stave off boredom) - an understanding of Nietzschean philosophy is probably not going to help me become better at bookmaking or computer programming, but it does maybe help to meet the need to feel as if I am progressing at something in life, that doesn't involve money.
