Well well well, it seems our Oxford and Cambridge betters have had their annual showing-off fest spoiled by a lone swimmer. Good luck to that Aussie chap I say. It took more than a bit of bottle to do that.

This pathetic event, celebrating the triumph of the British class system, is only ever interesting when one, or both, of the boats sink. It doesn't stop the Oxbridge mob at the BBC fawning about it as if it were the sports event of the year, when in reality it is about as interesting as watching the white gloss paint on your front door dry.

The next time there should be mobs of stone throwers on the Thames banks presenting the crews with a bit more of a challenge.

I don't understand all the hate for the boat race, doesn't do any harm to anyone.

It'd be made a whole lot more interesting if it was opened up to rowing teams representing other Universities, cup format, final is then 'The Boat Race'. Oxford and Cambridge could be seeded by all means but it'd give our national rowers around the country something 'glamourous' to get involved in.

I think if one year it was Newcastle Uni v Oxford a few of us may take interest, it'd be good publicity for the sport rather than the current stuffy image that it's reserved only for the upper classes.

Not a bad idea, it would open it up so that all the Country would have an interest.

I love the boat race a great British tradition.
I'm not bothered it if it's for so called toffs.

One wishes to make a wager on the victory of Cambridge, my stake shall be one of my country manors.

Couldn't disagree more with the majority of people on this thread. I really like it and I think there's much more pressing things for you all to be concerned about <ok>
