Can't remember what channel it's on, but has anyone been watching these repeats? I find the 70s and 80s games far more entertaining than the MOTD stuff. Crunching tackles, grounds with atmosphere, great goals - the lot. It was funny this week watching Brian Horton playing for Luton against Swansea in the first division.
When I saw this thread I thought it was about Leeds away this season. Yea I've seen it a few times, games are all well before my time but I enjoy watching it, it's a vastly different game now from what it was then. The things that strikes me most are the players seem to be proper gentleman with a hint of Bullards cheeky chappy thrown in (without the ****ness) and in interviews come across far better as people and professionals than the egotistical self important cheating whining winey woman beating raping sexual harassing barman punching speeding drink driving drug taking refusing to play ****s that are about nowadays. Another thing of note is I've never ever seen anyone dive on that program once. But to take a whole other perspective, I've never seen a black man on it either, so it's funny to me how the personalities seem to have taken a dive but the ethics are vastly improved.
One of the biggest things is the contrast it exposes between the way football is hyped today compared to the straightforward way it was presented in those days.
ITV 4 mate. It's on their iPlayer and all. I was born in the late 80s, so my recollection of football stems from the late 90s- now. I like to see how everything has changed in the old grounds, from terraces to bland all seaters. The managers & players seem to have more personality back then and all.
They aren't allowed to have a personality now though. Look at how the big PL club fans reacted to Brown and Holloway tainting their division. As for modern players, they can't win whatever they do.
To be fair I think everyone except the millions of Asians sat in their chippys and homes that make up the lions share of arsenals support liked brown. And I thought just about everyone liked holloway?
I think the only black footballer your likely to see on that programme would be a player that was with west Ham, cant think of his name though! Then early 80's was the rise of the likes of Viv Anderson, and the 3 degrees of west brom, one of which sadly died in a car crash (Laurie Cunningham ) Who was Hull Citys first black player? Believe it might of been Ray Daniel? Will never forget his cheeky goal against Spurs in 1987 in Jeff Radcliffe's testermonial, we won that day 2-1 against a strong Spurs team.
I remember most of these programmes the first time around. Great days now sadly gone. Great for youngsters to see what thinsg used to be like and how the game was played. Oh to see the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney on pitches like that - playing with balls like that and tackling very much like that.
