    The chronicle background.....

Mike Ashley is set to increase his stake in Rangers.

We understand that the Newcastle United owner has pledged a significant loan to the fallen Glasgow club after he had said no to an original request earlier this year.

The billionaire businessman already owns roughly seven per cent of Rangers, who have suffered dreadful financial troubles in recent years.

And it is believed that stake will be considerably bigger after his cheque is cashed by Rangers who are desperate for his money.

Those Newcastle fans who oppose the controversial Ashley regime will hope this is the beginning of the end of his time at the club, and that he will sell up and move out of St James’ Park in the near future.

And there have been strong rumours for some time that Ashley’s next project would be buying Rangers who despite their recent woes remain a massive club with the potential to make him money.

But this is a deal not without its complications.

Owning two football clubs in the same competition is forbidden, something that would be a problem if both Newcastle and Rangers – currently in the second tier of Scottish football – qualified for Europe in the same season.

However, Rangers are more than likely to still be a few years away from that level.

I hope he goes. I acknowledge he's brought stability to the club, but some of his car crash antics beggar belief and it's always in the back of your mind that there's another one just round the corner. If he goes, surely Pardew will, and we may get someone in with a basic knowledge of tactics and motivation. That and £25m for a centre half and forward should see us making a serious challenge for europe.

Selling up is easier said than done, effectively we have been up for sale for a loooonng time now and nobody has come forward to buy us.

When rangers do return to the top flight and it's by no means guaranteed to be this season I do think Ashley would chose them over us. It's a no brainer he could sell us and make a profit then rangers aren't worth much.

Then if he turned them around with European football EVERY season, the advertising for SD would be significantly broader.

I'm not against him selling obviously but I'd like somebody with financial power and to take over for the right reasons and be prepared to pit money into the team

He can own both clubs no problem so long as both are not in European competition. This being the case, why would he sell NUFC to buy Rangers unless he suddenly did a u-turn and started investing to get NUFC into Europe. We are far more likely to see MA keep both NUFC and Rangers. Once Rangers are back in the top flight, he can get them into the Champions League with far less investment than us - then he can just keep us ticking along mid-table. Champions League level advertising for Sports Direct and the fat European revenue from Rangers and Premier League level advertising and fat TV money from us. He can happily own and milk everything out of both clubs.

Correct. Oh what a wonderful, rosy future in stall for all of us.

Perhaps he'll let us become Rangers' feeder club?

    He likes those apparently...

I hope we all realise that Ashley leaving is only a good thing if the new owners treat the club better than he does now. If I had a choice between Mike Ashley and the Venky's, then I'd ****ing choose Ashley. Not trying to create a false dichotomy here, all I'm saying is that we could quite easily do worse than Ashley. Even if we get owners in that love football and love Newcastle, if they throw money around stupidly, then that could mean the end of any hope.

We really need an owner that's willing to invest in the club, but also remain sensible financially, and doesn't interfere too much with targets.

I don't think we necessarily need an owner keen to invest much more money to be honest. At least no more than what the club generates, funding itself.

What it needs is an owner who understands the club's philosophy, local importance, history, embraces the fans (the customer) and actually has ambitions on the pitch.
If he runs the club sensibly like the business that it clearly is no one has a problem, but as you say it's about getting that balance right and not gambling either way.

You get those other things right and certainly if you invest in a better manager, I don't think the squad needs much more money thrown into the fire.

The irony for me is that if Mike Ashley had actually done all of those things, I believe he would be making more money from an immensely more valuable, global product.

Potential is massive at NUFC given it's single city, captive audience – you could basically own the region, emotionally and commercially.

I'm not interested in what the Chronicle says. They have a sullied agenda which is becoming tiresome. Ashley is not my favourite person by any stretch but that whole media group are embarrassing themselves with this campaign of negativity.

Another ifs and buts story from the Chronicle.
Pasted all over the front page, it probably sold a few extra copies to mugs (like me), only to see a nothing story shunted into the corner of page 9.

Why does he want Rangers?. Could be the fact Rangers have a world wide fan base much bigger than ours, virtual guaranteed European football every year ( once they get up ) to promote his tat and brand name.

Joining in with the Chronicle, when Rangers get back into Europe, probably in the Europa League first, possibly next season if they win a cup, but more likely in two years time, we could become their Feeder Club. MA thinking ahead?

If only then I would start going back to st James park and start buying club franchise and that could also mean inept pardew would be more likely to be getting the train to London.
regarding pardew asking for 10 games he can go blow he has had his chance and even winning a trophy would not make me change my mind the bloke is just too Inept for words
