I've known a few people to just grow it without the hydroponics or lamps. It's a temperate weed - it likes tropical climes but a good water and plenty of sunlight will see it grow anywhere. If they grow naturally, they don't yield as much bud, though. With lamps, you need to amend the amount of light it gets each day in order for it to first grow (24hrs light), then bud (12hrs light) - how you get from one to 'tother differs depending who you're talking to. My mate had a few plants just sitting in his living room - they all came on fine (could've had a bigger yield if he'd bothered his arse) but the best story goes to a guy I knew on the South Side. A guy I knew had grown loads of White Widow and gave this guy a cutting - he just stuck it on his window sill and it pretty much grew a bit, then withered and was on the verge of dying with no bud to speak of. Someone walking a dog in the park outside his flat recognised the plant and phoned the polis - the polis were laughing at him saying it was "the ****iest plant we've ever seen, wee man" and he had to go through the whole legal process about it.
