There's bound to be a degree of contrast and comparison between the BBC and Sky presentations this year and I thought a thread more in celebration of what the BBC delivers would be nice (unless there's one already buried deep within this forum's history, in which case it's a rubbish idea).

This might be a good place to start:

It's a good use of the resources available to the BBC (Murray Walker) before he goes to that big parc fermé in the sky and, who knows, perhaps in more general terms the competition with Sky might push the BBC to raise its already impressive game still further.

Well Schumacher will obviously be in, which leaves 3 places for Alonso, Vettel, Button and Hamilton. I'm fairly sure it'll be Schumacher, Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton who make the top 10 with Button say 22nd and Riakkonen at 23rd maybe?

I can see why there would be four current drivers in the top 20, but am a bit less sure why Button and Kimi would be on multiple people's all-time lists, which they must have been to just miss out.

Button and Raikkonen might well be the other way around but it wouldn't make much difference. It'll be interesting to see how much further up the list Hamilton comes because only his relatively short F1 career in comparison with Button and Raikkonen separates him.

Sticking with the theme of new stuff the BBC is doing in response to having to share with Sky, then, there's a bit of extra exposure tonight:

I'm not condoning the One Show or watching DC chat about cookery, but it's what they're doing to promote the show.

Yuo have to remember that people only compare what they know, so people who've been watching it 10 years will think Hamilton and Alonso are far superior to the likes of Clarke or Brabham, and think Ascari is simply the name of some bends. I wouldn't like to give a top ten, as I can't compare anyone pre 80's as I never realy saw them drive.

Comparisons are always subjective and hence always a source of argument. Argument itself should be encouraged - but only so long as it remains respectful. However, when feelings run high about who's best or who shouldn't be on the list, unfortunately, fora become an increasingly traditional venue for vitriol.

I say this in the hope that this forum continues to mature into a respectful venue for discussion and expression of opinion; and in the hope that any future poll in the manner suggested be regarded with a forum-wide respect amongst members.

Well, it being the BBC, I'm sure Hamilton will be in the top 10 and therefore this supposed "win" will instantly become another "fail".

I've retired from "top 10" when it comes to drivers, as it's mostly BS being thrown around.

You can't really do a top 20, because of the way the sport has changed over the years. You can do a top 10 of each era, but to do a greatest 20 of all time is rather pointless. For all we know, Jimmy Clark could be crap in todays F1, and Fernando Alonso could be crap in the 60's.

Ha! As Kyle has just demonstrated, even opinion about the criteria used to make a choice, is itself subjective!

It's like trying to be objective about religion, in that most (in fact, virtually all) pre-existing religions try to influence the rules for as many others as possible!

I reckon you could make a top 20, but that no-one would ever agree with you completely.

For instance, I would of the drivers on the grid currently probably only place Schumacher in mine. POSSIBLY Vettel* and Alonso** on the very fringes. So many multiple world champions to fit in before you get to them though.

*It is well-documented I am not his biggest fan, I don't doubt though that he will go down in history as an all-time great. Right now I don't think he's earned that right.
**I reckon he's got at least one more WDC in him. How much will the toy-throwing at Mclaren come back to haunt him?

Ha! Nice bit of bias you demonstrate there Tom! Still, as the footballers say; at the end of the day, that's all there is to it really: opinion.

I'd include Schumacher in the top 20 on manipulative ability alone; but as a driver, and including current drivers, there are several within the past two decades I'd put ahead of him with clear daylight…

Well I can agree he probably deserves a place in the top 20, but without seeing the others I can't really say how he compares.
He came 14th in the "famous" Autosport poll of a few seasons back.
