Israeli forces have detained five Palestinians after an Israeli man was beaten to death on a Jewish settlement in the West Bank.

Sraya Ofer, a retired colonel, was killed after going outside to investigate noises at his home in the northern Jordan Valley, police say.

His wife was injured but escaped and raise the alarm. Checkpoints were set up as security forces scoured the area.

Israeli media say the couple had been attacked with iron bars and axes.

Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman Peter Lerner said the Palestinians had been detained in an investigation "focused on intelligence".

The attack took place at around 01:00 (22:00 GMT) at the Shadmot Mehola settlement, an Israeli army spokesman told the BBC.

The woman, who escaped through a security fence, told police the attackers were Palestinians.

The settlement is in a part of the Jordan Valley which Israel captured in the war of 1967 where the construction of Israeli homes and businesses is widely considered a breach of international law - something Israel does not accept, says the BBC's Kevin Connolly in Jerusalem.

The dead man is the third Israeli to be killed in what Israel characterises as "terror attacks" in the last month in the West Bank. Two serving soldiers have also died.

Israel security officials quoted in the local media have not appeared to detect a pattern in the sudden increase in the level of violence, but at least one right-wing member of the cabinet has said Israel should respond by ending peace talks with the Palestinians, our correspondent adds.

Israel sounds a bit like Belfast but sunny, you should go there for your holidays.

You just have to love the way the BBC imposes it's own political agenda even in a story where a totally innocent man was brutally murdered in his own home by Arab terrorists.

The BBC's supposedly "impartial" news reporting makes me sick to my stomach.

Would love to go. Guy in my work went and said he felt it was the safest place in the world, mainly because everywhere he went people were armed to the teeth.

It's a funny one - the BBC is full of four-be-twos and front wheel skids yet it has an anti-Israel bias?

I have visited Israel half a dozen times, Syria thrice, the Lebanon twice and northern Palestine once.

Ponders End is far more threatening than all of these places.

Russia, Iran and Syria have succeeded in politically ghaping the US and France is the long and short of it <ok>

Turkey are beeling now, so are Qatar and our dear friends the Israelis. Saudi Arabia are blustering but a bit more scared after they made a failed attempt to bribe the Russians into dropping Assad, where it was made clear the first squadron of Russian MiGs would be heading their way in the event of any strike
