Read a really fascinating article based on a book by Andrew Alexander.

In it he basically puts forward the view that the Cold War could have been avoided, but for American arrogance and its misunderstanding of cultures traditions and how other countries tick.

He basically asserts that there was no desire for a war by the Russians who were quite willing to 'play', especially after the death of Stalin. But the Americans automatically branded them as 'running scared' and this ultimately instilled nationalism, pride etc into the Russians which lead to years of mistrust.

There are papers etc to back up his assertions

There is also similar views about Vietnam. In Fact Defence secretary Robert Mcnamara, an enthusiast for the war, later wrote
‘We underestimated the power of nationalism to motivate a people to fight and die for their beliefs and values. Our misjudgments of friends and foes alike reflected our profound ignorance of the history, culture and politics of the people in the area and the personalities and the habits of their leaders.’

This it seems continues today if we are to believe that 'W' had to be briefed about the division in Iraq between Shia and Sunni on the eve of the invasiion. He had apparently never heard of this

The question is, is America incapable of pursuing peace and thus the biggest threat to the world?

The greatest threat to world peace and human decency comes from the Yanks. If they even smell oil they start planning the next war.
