What a fantastic footballing nation that has been ! (Did I ever tell you I have the great Alex James' autograph? - I do. From the 'Wembley Wizards' of 1928 - England 1, Scotland 5 at Wembley. Alex scored two that day I believe. Not that I was even born then - in spite of what young Billy and Commo might tell you <laugh> huh, punks, the pair of them <laugh>). It's so sad to see Scotland's modern decline. I sincerely hope Scottish kids will one day renew their interest in football and enrich all our lives with their sheer excellence, as indeed, they once used to, don't you?

Certainly do, mate. I've been in the Phoenix umpteen times. And I remember when The Chesters opened! I couldn't swear to it but I think that building was an orphanage or something of that sort before it became a pub. It got tarted up a lot around 1958-60. I used to go into the Blue Bell at Fulwell every Saturday night for a couple of years around that time because they had a good traditional jazz band on upstairs and it was packed out every week (that was the time when Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball were making top ten hit records). But that photo is much older than I remember - there isn't an upstairs yet! I remember The Grand on Bridge Street but us young'uns didn't go there much. It was a place where a lot of sea captains used to meet up midday when they were home. I remember going into The Norfolk Arms on Norfolk St. once, but never again! <laugh> That was what we today would call the gay pub. Jesus, if a young feller dropped something on the floor there he wouldn't dare pick it up! <laugh> I very quickly decided it wasn't the place for me and left. I enjoyed watching that - thanks.
