We had one last year but you didn't have to do it online which was her complaint this time. The current rates mean you might as well put your money under your mattress if you have any.

The Nationwide official website states that the account can be opened in branch if assistance is needed - then managed online or via a phone app.

Their 'jobsworthyness' when you tried to help your wife's cashpoint withdrawal was ridiculous - especially in view of it being a joint account -- and made to look even more stupid if they expected you / someone to assist the management of the online savings account [ Flex Regular Saver ]. This assistance is as much the responsibility of Nationwide as it is for you - and it is the simple sort of assistance Nationwide should be falling over themselves to provide -- but-- do what I do -- bang your head on a wall - SHOUT- swear - state the bleeding obvious - and still get nowhere (( because the idiots don't understand basic commonsense. ))..................... for the sake of your sanity -

    1. Don't bother
    2. Open the account for you wife - and manage it for her. You can do this online -- It's very easy....... and, as I previously stated - be careful when 12 months have elapsed. The money will go into a crap interest account - which Nationwide open for you ( if you don't nominate the funds being transferred into a main account. ) Close to the maturity date you can complete online instructions to close and direct the funds to an account of your choosing - then - the day afterwards you can open another 12 month Regular Saver account and repeat the process.. It's not difficult - and I'm not sure if it is fair of me to say that it's too much trouble ( it isn't ) -- I've got a few of these types of investments spread over several banks -- in an effort to try to get some interest on my money.

    3. To maximise your opportunity - you can open a Flex Regular Saver for both you and your wife. There are qualifying criteria - such as minimum monthly 'pay-in.' -- but this can be overcome by having a direct debit of funds paid in, from one account, on one day, and withdrawn the next - and on day 3 having another direct debit paid into a second Flex Regular Saver account - thereby using the same money twice...........................

...............see, everyone - I can be useful !

    One is not impressed !

You could be forgiven for thinking that a I'm referring to the awful standard by The Gills in today's game. But, you'd be wrong ! I refer to the nonsense that is the New Year's 'honours list.'

I haven't made a secret that I 'follow' the fortunes of Spurs - I used to go to the 'Lane' if Spurs were at home when Gills played away --- Even given my affection for Spurs, I find it ridiculous to award Harry Kane with an M.B.E. What for ? --Services to football !!!! w.t.f ! He's a guy in his mid twenties who has kicked a leather ball on a bit of grass and gets paid a huge amount - I mean an obscene amount of money for the privilege............... can somebody enlighten me if I'm missing something ( other than my sanity ) -- AND -- I'm actually being serious ------------ He's probably a nice guy ( I'm now stuck for anything else to say about the justification for this award )

I should have asked to speak to Batman !....................

................. well - what did I say on 6th December ? - I can't help being alwaysright -- 1st January came and went - and NO bloody direct debit !

So, today I rang British Gas and spoke to Robin. He couldn't understand why the direct debit hadn't been set up - " it only takes one simple click " ( his words ).
Robin still put me through the rigmarole of asking for ALL the bank details AGAIN !
He then assured me that it was now all done and set up for 1st February ............... will he turn out to be a 'boy wonder ?'

......... I couldn't resist asking him if Bruce Wayne worked for British Gas !

    Well done Crystal Palace !
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-46920569

They didn't have to do it!

There are several other PL clubs who perform roles that benefit the community - but this often goes unpublished. It is very easy to be critical of the 'apparent' financial 'greed' in the Premiership ---- and I share the same thoughts that money at the top, has devastated football at 'our' level -- but -- whose fault is that ? The simple answer is the money given by Sky and BT --- but, should the clubs and players feel guilty ? - they are in business - and generate their income according to ability of their resources.
We could have different viewpoints about the morality of the situation - I can see it from the polar opposite point of view ---- in the meantime, I am grateful that Crystal Palace are doing something of a real practical nature to help a few less fortunate people.

There has been a load of talk on your board previously about VAR and players diving etc. You have to have a look at the replay of the Brentford penalty decision tonight in their cup game against Barnet. It is one of the worst decisions I have ever seen anywhere and the player who "won" the penalty should be so ashamed of himself that he drowns himself in the communal bath in the dressing room. No VAR but if ever there was a case for actually having it this is it. The gap between the player that went down and the one nearest him is at least a yard. This is where the FA should act after the event in my book. Totally shocking.

Absolutely agree. I know that VAR isn't everyone's cup of hot Bovril, but USED PROPERLY it'll cut out at least some of the cheating that goes on.

However it's the 'getting it right' bit that's important, which is the 'clear and obvious' bit about overturning the decision made on the pitch. If the VAR panel can't determine within about 15 seconds whether a decision should be overturned, then the on pitch decision should stand. Endless replays, slow motions and different angles, none of which can be seen by the crowd who therefore don't have a clue what's going on, will only cause frustration and annoyance.

Well, our friends at Millwall certainly got a helping 'hand' because of the absence of VAR - but what do they care if nobody likes them ?

It's not often that I lose an argument !
Yesterday, I visited my mother [ who has severe dementia ]. When the postman arrived, he brought a letter from mum's orthopaedic clinic - inviting her to phone them to make an appointment............. and, as usual she will be escorted by me - and I will have to do all the talking !

The last time they wrote to her, mum did what she tends to do with her post - 'hide' the letters in a drawer somewhere in her home -- this can lead to problems -so- I asked them to not write to my mum - instead to phone my sister-in-law ( Audrey ) - who lives very close to my mum and can check on correspondence etc. They agreed to do so -- but -- obviously 'forgot.'

So, it was as well that I happened to be visiting my mum, and tried to deal with the appointment procedure.................. until I stumbled across Mrs. Hitler on the other end of the phone !

I rang the number for the clinic - and introduced myself, and gave all of my mum's details - including d.o.b, NHS number, and her unique reference number with the clinic. I stated that I was calling to make an appointment - as per the request in their letter. I stated that mum was with me - but their records will show her mental illness - hence my involvement.

Now - whenever I have made the same call to the clinic in the past, I have not had to jump through hoops - but, yesterday, I encountered a person who was even less use than a linesman at a football match. --- At this point I was going to make misogynistic remarks, including material relating to pre-menstruation and lack of orgasms - but I'll be kind and not do so.

Mrs. Hitler asked to speak to Audrey - as she was their designated contact point for my mum. I explained my status - and said that I was on their system ( referred to in the medical notes compiled by the specialist ) - and that Audrey's details are only on their system because of her geographical closeness.....Mrs Hitler wouldn't budge. Her tone was very ' It's Friday afternoon, and I can't be bothered to be sensible, let alone helpful.' As I tried to plead my case she just put the phone down on me.......... ((( brb - I can see you laughing !!! ))) - I wasn't impressed - but there was worse to come.

I rang the number again. I was going to let my mum speak to Mrs. Hitler ( I thought one f-ing idiot might get through to another f'-ing idiot ). I had the phone on loudspeaker- so was able to hear the conversation.

As my mum identified herself, I could hear Mrs. Hitler interrupting and telling my mum that she wasn't going to speak to my mum - because she would only speak to Audrey. I was fuming. I interrupted and told Mrs. Hitler that she was speaking to THE ACTUAL PATIENT - the person that she had written to - THE ACTUAL PERSON which the letter asked to contact the clinic - NOT AUDREY. Mrs Hitler refused to discuss the matter - saying that she would contact Audrey. I asked Mrs. Hitler if she understood irony - because contacting Audrey was what she was supposed to do in the first place - if she had bothered to read my mum's medical notes.

You'll not be surprised to know that Ms. Hitler then again put the phone down on me.

.......nb - Mrs.Hitler did contact Audrey later that day.

I actually 'lost it' for a few seconds - I had to stop myself from getting into my car and going to Nazi Headquarters - I wouldn't have stopped until they took me out and shot me !
