The AFC "TW desperation" and "wishful thinking" thread

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by Hoddle is a god, Aug 30, 2013.

  1. I would hope that our mods have enough of a sense of humour to let this thread run until next Friday, a good three days after the close of the TW, when Arsenal and its fans will have had time to sweat over and then cogitate on the signings they make (if any), and where it positions them relative to us. There is much hilarity to be had already, and I can almost guarantee that the comedy will be solid gold as we approach Tuesday.

The comedy is a mixture of out and out despair that Whinger has not only done no business in the market, but appears to be unconcerned whether any is done or not; plus there is, what I have chosen to refer to, as the "wishful thinking" posts/comments, through which disgruntled Gooners desperately attempt to appease their despair by convincing themselves that all of our signings are rubbish and that our depth of squad remains a pale shadow of their own mighty paper-thin squad.

I'll kick things off with this collection of gems:-

This comment has a certain juvenile charm about it. I strongly suspect that little Nathan is one of the AFC's board's many school-boy posters:

"Is it possible that Real get cold feet in the last minute and pull out of the Bale deal?
Then the spuds will be facing bankruptcy!" (nathan123)

Bless! I'll put this one in the "wishful thinking" box.

"If we went and spent £70m+ on Di Maria, Ozil and Benzema we would be genuine title contenders. That would be a HUGE improvement to our squad, bring our depth back and be the few top quality players who could push us up a level.

Signing those three as well as sanogo, flamini and possibly a defender/gk still would make this one of the most successful transfer windows of Wengers time.

Maybe Madrid want to recoup a large amount of the Bale transfer immedietly? And maybe with all 3 of them comming we can convince them they will make the difference and we can win trophies?

All that said - I just can't see this happening. I do think Madrid want to clear 1 or possibly 2 of these players out of the squad and i do think we would go for them - but all 3 of them? It'd be a miracle." (afctfw)

I've reproduced this wonderful post complete with all of its grammatical and spelling errors. It is a perfect example of how despair and hope have come together in the hearts and minds of most Gooners to create a potent mixture of despair that is oh-so ready to explode, come Tuesday morning. Notice, for example, how afctfw doesn't even stop to think how unlikely it would be for Real to get in Bale (one player) and to ship-out Ozil, Benzema and Di Maria (three quality first teamers). Despair has eaten into the poor fellow's brain and seriously affected his powers of reasoning.

This one is the best of the three, and typifies the most desperate of wishful thinking currently eating away at the souls of most Gooners:

"Don't get me wrong, I think Spurs have done well this window to get the players that they have. Soldado and Paulinho are quality additions, the others not so much, but decent squad players. You've done well to get your business done before selling your best player, a tip we could learn from. But overall I think the players you've bought are overpriced and the total spend, regardless of where it came from is an eye watering amount to splash out in one transfer window. But there's no way you can tell me that spending 1OOm and finishing outside the top four is good business." (PESKIE)

This appears to be a constant theme for PESKIE, that AVB/Levy/Baldini have been completely stupid to pay good money for the likes of Capoue, Chadi and Chirinches, whilst Whinger (by contrast) has been shrewd to spend nothing. It is "wishful thinking" personified.

So, come on guys! Let's be having your own personal gems. Use this thread to post your moments of comedy gold as the clock ticks down to the end of a wonderful Summer transfer window.

I should have learned my lesson by now - Piskie's posts are so full of contradictions that he's impossible to argue with. Not surprised you get so ded up with him HIAG. I'm going to stop wasting my time.

  3. I hear you, my friend.

He doesn't appear to be posting over here any more (has he been banned?) but continues to wage his one-man wum-war over on the Gooner and Chav boards. He cannot help himself. It was only a matter of time before he undid himself.

That said, the funniest comments, I am sure, are going to come from the rank-and-file Gooners, many of whom, like PESKIE, have stood loyally by Whinger whilst he has slowly dragged the club into decline. Last season's last-ditch 4th placing by a mere single point, will prove, I am sure, to have been his last hurrah in the CL.

Once we start losing or one of our players goes through a bad patch, then your "friends" will reappear as it means by their sheer presence they know they can wind up our fans, thats why its been quiet recently with WUM's as they are all worried about their team, rather then thinking of ways to annoy a team which has picked up 6 points from 2 games.

But fear not HIAG, your "Mate" will be back LOL

  5. I suspect you are right, Boss.

For the time being, I am loving the comedy gold moments whilst the Gooners go into melt-down.

I'm betting they sign Cabaye at the 11th hour for twice what he's worth, and then we'll have every Gooner convincing themselves that Whinger hasn't made them look like muppets, because they did manage to sign a "name."

I am so much looking forward to Sunday.

I know you can't post on their board but it's a bit negative to go picking posts from the Goon board to take here and mock.

Not a mod opinion, just my personal opinion. Those comments are quite funny though <whistle>

  8. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the Gunners have a better squad than Tottenham and does not rule out bringing striker Nicklas Bendtner, 25, back to the club.
    (Source: The Mirror)

    WTF!!!!!

    Oh, and also <doh>.

So, that's going to be Whinger's big signing, is it? Bringing back Bendtner - the man who tripped over his own shoe-laces on one of the blackest nights in European football? The only reason AFC still have Bendtner to bring back is because no other club wants to buy him.

    This is utterly laughable.

  9. This tickled me, from a poster who seems to have a particularly angry bee in his bonnet about Spurs, at the moment:

"I'd be really dissapointed if we signed Chadli and Chiriches. I wouldn't want players like that for squad depth. I think even squad players at Arsenal should be better than what i've seen of them.

Paulinho, Erikson, Soldado, Lamela - these are the types of players i'd happily take for squad depth. Not sure which, if any of these would during a season assert themselves on the first 11 (mainly because of the positions they play we are pretty strong, not because they arent very good players). But they would definately add strength to the squad and get plenty of game time over the course of a season.

Tbh i'm still hoping we tie up transfers of a higher quality than the guys you have brought in. If we had spent 100m and had the players you have i'd be asking if they where really going to take us to the next level or just bulk up the squad and make top 4 easier. For you lot though it's fantastic business and they are the kind of players you need to be bringing in until you manage CL football." (afcftw)

    <doh>

I am almost embarrassed for this poster.

Anyway, what's he complaining for? Doesn't he know that Whinger is going to recall the mighty Bendtner? Now, that is quality, right there!

  10. There's a thread over on the Gooners' board in which they are tearing one another to bits. It's quite distressing to witness. Perhaps what we should do is throw them all in a pit with a knife, and tell that the last one left standing will be permitted to walk out. It would be the most humane thing to do, I reckon.

Funniest comment I saw over there was some Gooner mooting the possibility that Whinger would announce, on the last day of the window, the purchase of Ozil, Benzema, and Di Maria, yet again!

There's wishful thinking, then there is delusion, and then there is insanity.

The "this was arsenals moment but..." Thread is a good read!

Opinion of their transfer window is split right down the middle, to the point where posters on both sides of the discussion feel so strongly about their point, they arguing with each other.

For all the grief you give arsenal fans Hiag, there are some I've seen who talk sense, though.

God, this thread is like bitching in the playground behind people's backs. Yes, our transfer window has been piss poor at the moment, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

  13. So what? Get lost, this thread hasn't been posted for your benefit. This thread has been created so that interested Spurs fans can laugh at all you Gooners throwing your toys out of your prams, and trying to convince one another that Spurs has not considerably strengthened in this window.

You really do not need to come on this thread to tell everyone that you don't like it, okay? Given that you are a Gooner you may rest assured that we will all assume that you will not find the subject of this thread amusing.

  14. Granted, Roo. My scorn is reserved for the afcftw, TheBear, and PESKIE's of this world.

This transfer window must be frightening to the likes of PESKIE, because it must be a very close approximation of the realisation of his greatest nightmare.

I didn't think it was possible but Afcftw is an even more blinkered Gooner fan than Piskie. I didn't think that was possible but his posts are so full of bitterness against our signings and eternal hope that the next 3 days are going to be full of signings for them.
How he can write off Chiriches and Chadli before they have even played in the premier league is laughable.
I commented on their board that when they signed Koscielny we could have said the same thing but he has turned out to be a great signing.

It's reverted to HIAG replying to himself now too. Hmm. Anyway you never have confirmed if you're Sandy Brown or not... Are you?

Also I'm not really sure how you're expecting arsenal fans to react though HIAG??

Anyhow, the most overriding feeling I have at the moment is apathy. Time was when a home 3-1 loss to villa would make me go crazy, but when it happened this year I just shrugged my shoulders and thought, "can't complain, fair enough". At least my Liverpool supporting Dad has just as little to gloat about:)

Afcftw and Toledo are the most guilty I think. All you need to do is read through their post history and you'd find some gems for this thread. But that would just be a bit desperate...

  18. Yeah, I saw that, CJ. It was a good point well made, but completely lost on afcftw (and PESKIE).

I am undecided as to whether or not the embittered Gooners (and I do recognise that not all of them are) are simply dense, or if they genuinely believe the rubbish they write.

Still, it is great fun watching PESKIE, in particular, arguing himself in circles, as he tries to rationalise the fact that we have massively strengthened whilst, at the same time maintaining his love for Whinger in the face of increasing and insurmountable proof that the man has rendered AFC a complete and utter laughingstock in the footballing world.

I'm not entirely sure how any of those three responses are linked in any way to my three statements but anyhoo... Enjoy your rants HIAG;)

These threads were more fun when you managed to reel PISKIE into them. One if these days it might happen again.

For once I agree with you (about PISKIE).

However, I'm not him... I'm not deluded... And I don't get sucked into the endless blackhole of getting caught in your PISKIE bait.

I was actually making one or two salient comments about football and arsenal. The fact I'm so apathetic about arsenal at the moment frustrates me. I knew United were no longer rivals when I stopped going on their 606 board (in the old days) because they're was nothing left to banter about because they were so far ahead of us.

At the moment, I'm sliding towards that with more clubs too. Defeat hurts when it happens to a club you deem that you're better than. But if it happens often enough you start to reassess your own ideas about how good your club really is.

My apathy will either revert to 'cautious optimism' by the end of transfer window (unlikely) or 'screw this, I've got more important things in life to worry about' (more likely).

Nothing like pretending you don't care when things aren't going you're way to hide the pain ;)
