I wouldn't be dissapointed if we signed Austin but to suggest that he will automatically come in, score goals and be a better fit for the team than Pelle is madness.
I too don't buy into this "proven premier league" guaranteed goalscorer stuff... Bent, Jeffers, Caroll, Torres etc - there are no guarantees
Sure certain players (e.g. typically South American players) often take a little longer to settle/don't settle to the style of football but players like Alderweireld, Pelle and Wanyama are great fits for the premierleague - it's about identifying the best fit for this team and not throwing money at premierleague talent just because they have had a good season. For £10m Austin is worth a punt, any more and I'd prefer to look elsewhere.
Great post, exactly what I was trying to say but you word it a hell of a lot better![]()
Okay, I think there could be a little more honesty here. I'll start it off so it's easier for others (and this is regardless of the fact I DO want us to sign Austin).
I, LTL, get more excited when we sign someone weird and wonderful from abroad that I haven't heard of. Just being honest, it's more FUN. There's just something about signing someone we don't really know because there's always the chance we could be unearthing the new Messi. Yes, it could equally be the new De Ridder, but come on, how many of us really knew all that much about Mané before he put on a Saints shirt. You're not going to sign the new Messi from GB because my god, we'd have heard about it in our ridiculous press from the day they were born.
Of course it's exciting getting a Brit too. It's exciting when they're a 'proven' player, or a player other teams are desperate to secure. I'd be excited if we get Austin, no doubt, but there's just something that appeals to the child in me when we sign someone a little mysterious!
If Juanmi signs and he can get his form back you will be excited.Right! That was my point. And in all honesty I think I'm the same. I guess get more excited for the exotic foreigners too.
If Juanmi signs and he can get his form back you will be excited.
Juanmi isn't a main striker. He can play just behind the main striker or on the wings. He isn't Mane fast but has a good turn of speed. Juanmi is one of those players the balls seems to stick to and has a fair bit of skill. So yeah we will be after a main striker. You think if we get Jaunmi it will be aswell as another striker??? This guy good? Fast?
At first it seems like a ridiculous argument, but I've mentioned this before, and I do think it has some merit. I personally think exotic nationalities and names do go a little way in making a player seem more appealing to the fan base. I simply can't understand why people don't rate Austin. He took the absolute piss last season playing for a crap team. I'm a little inclined to believe that had QPR bought him from River Plate or Sampdoria, and his name been a bit more mental, people would have been far more excited about him. Look at the fee Everton paid for Lukaku!! And as soon Benteke scores in 4 or 5 games, people dismiss the half a season where he didn't score at all, and suggest he is good enough for Real Madrid etc...
Sorry FLT, wasn't meant at you, more just a general rant thing...
Didn't take it personally ...
*deep breath*
* wipes tear*
I rate him and I haven't seen anyone (I don't think) not rate him, just question the price if it gets too high. Austin would be a good signing. We need more goals. My comments were all about the English bit and that it doesn't bother me either way.![]()
As I asked earlier FLT, what would be the maximum you would pay?
I'd like us to get him for 10M. I'd be happy to pay more, but that would depend on how much that eats into the budget against the number of players we need to get to have a large enough squad (I did mention this earlier).
What I mean by that is I don't want us to for example spend 15M on Toby, 15M on Charlie if that then meant we'd only be able to say spend another 10M on a CM and that would be it, as I think we need at least 5 players in and this depends on how many go.
Any idea on what we have to spend?
Austin would be a great, great buy for us, I have no idea why people are arguing against it. Sure there will be other strikers worth looking at, but if there is a chance we can get him we should 100% go for it.
He is young, English and (no matter what a few of you folks say) buying from someone already used to the premier league is less of a gamble. Every transfer is a gamble but there are less things to go wrong when a player moves in the same league.
I'm not sure if you guys have watched him much this season to be criticising him? He is a big step up on pelle. QPR are absolutely awful and he still scored more than our grazi
Yeah I meant one striker as in an out and out striker. That would give us Pelle, new ST, Long & Mane as options up top.
And Jayrod
forgot about him! But proves the point even more we only need one forward really.I want Austin for one main reason. The following Sun headline:
"Austin Powers Saints to European Glory!"
