Vikings down to #4: they get a 4th round pick, 5th round pick and 7th round pick! Great business given that they didn't want Richardson!!! Seahawks and Dolphins have probably made the riskiest picks in the first round. Patriots uncharacteristically trade up... twice.
First round draft day rumour mill Jags pretty public in their intention to trade down, Vikings look willing to do so, Browns might be open to the possibility but seem likely to take Richardson Rams (Blackmon/Richardson), Bills (Kalil) and Chiefs (Tannehill) are among the teams that might look to trade up. Tannehill to Dolphins is in my opinion not the shoe-in the mock drafts might suggest. If he's as good as the hype, surely he'll go at #7. If he's not, do the Dolphins really need him this season? Growing belief today that Richardson could be drafted at #3 by whoever trades with Vikings. Pundits starting to feel that they've underpredicted where Chandler Jones will be drafted.
To start off, the teams are put in reverse order: the worst team picks the young player they want first (in theory getting the best player) and the best team picks last (in theory getting the weakest). In practise, certain positions are more popular than others (quarterbacks are usually drafted first, and you won't see kickers for a few rounds), and teams' needs are different than others. Then you get trading, which is where the fun starts. For instance, the Vikings and the Jags are looking for strength in depth, so they're willing to trade away one very high selection for a larger number of lower selections. And if a team is desperate enough to get a certain player, they will give away an arm and a leg to get him. So, this evening it was announced that the Vikings have traded with the Browns. What that means is that the Browns get to pick the third selection. As we know for certain that the Colts and Redskins are picking quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. That means that third pick will guarantee them Trent Richardson. If the Browns didn't trade, the Vikings were going to trade that selection to someone else who really wants him. In exchange, the Vikings get the Browns' 4th pick, and they also get THREE of the Browns' picks in lower rounds.

What happens if a player is picked by a team he doesn't want to play for? Like if a West coaster has family he wants to stay near but is chosen by an East coast team.
That does happen. It even happened with the first overall pick of 2004, Eli Manning. In the lower rounds it tends not to draw much attention, but the NFL make a point of ensuring these things are sorted out relatively amicably (on the surface at least: Manning was scathing in the media about the idea of going to San Diego). In Manning's case, San Diego drafted him first overall. They ended up trading with New York for the quarter back they drafted (Philip Rivers, a good quarterback in his own right), and two other players they drafted. I believe money can change hands in that situation too.
Hey guys! Not a huge fan of the three-day draft, but they didn't consult me. Who do you guys want your teams to take?
The 49ers don't need much. We could either trade away a raft of picks to try and pick DeCastro, or simply chill out and pick the best players that end up in our slots.
That's a much nicer position to be in than Miami, who just made the Egg McMuffin of first round picks by taking Ryan Tannehill. Christ Almighty...
That was a shocker. I said in the build-up I felt the experts had to be wrong there. Far from it, that's the only non-certainty they've got right so far. Vikings surely the early winners in this draft? The Browns have another first round pick, but that was still very expensive. Panthers seem to have made a good selection too.
Yeah, I really like Minnesota's pick. Gotta give a young QB a solid offensive line to work behind. I'm 90 minutes from Cleveland, and a lot of my Browns fan friends really wanted Justin Blackmon. I dunno, they had big needs in the backfield and out wide. Couldn't have gone wrong with either guy. All things being equal, I would have taken RG3 if I'm the Colts, but Andrew Luck will be an easier sell.
Floyd pick is interesting. Really loved him as a college player and can absolutely torch a defense, but the Cards have no offensive line. At all. They'll be throwing up jump balls on every down and telling Fitz and Floyd to go get it.
I think unless the Colts strongly felt Griffin was better they probably felt obligated to go for the bigger name. In fairness there doesn't seem to be a lot in it, and to an extent you can never tell until they've played a season.
And there's the shocker of the first round. Bruce Irvin to Seattle makes Tannehill look like a rare stroke of genius, rather than a stroke.
