Just watched that video of rowell's hattrick aand one of the links at the end is to "Gary Bennett vs David Speedie" remember watching that from the roker end thinking "Wish I was in the clock stand paddock!!"
Love it! I remember going to roker and standing in the Main Stand paddocks as a teenager when our reserves were playing blackburn reserves (I think) - Speedie was up front for them and I basically walked the length of the field following him constantly saying "Speedie - you're a ****er" - took about 60 minutes before he reacted and shouted "**** off you little scumbag" so me and my mates wound him up till he got himself booked and substituted! Class memory! Have no idea if the game was any good mind!!
An idea for a thread, most hated players.. Have candidates like, Speedie, Belemany,, Savage, Barton etc.
Played in the same school team with 'Lord Rowell' until the under 15's....great player and great lad. His dad I think had played for Sunderland in the past. He achieved the ultimate dream for a local lad scoring three against the 'Nags' at there place.....what a day!
I need to make an appointment at the opticians. I read Rowell as Rodwell. Rodwell hat trick against the mags in March anyone?
I was at the Chelsea semi final 2nd leg match, and it was scary like and their supporters went mad but luckily there was a barb wire fence between us !. The final which I early went to (6am start) was a massive disappointment though, yet again the team did not turn up.
i was in the paddock that night. not as close as you but not far off. i was a tad dissapointed gary, with a little help from our fans, didn't punch his ****ing lights out, to be honest. horrible little twat Mr Speedie.
Re Lord Rowells hat trick I was in dark sided end with a Sunderland Poly dark sided friend - he advised re a planned ambush after match using the Leases redevelopment rubble. Due to mist did'nt see all goal"s but heard our fans cheering and celebrated among their fans with no problems - just odd looks -- probably all dark sided bad lads were preparing for the ambush after the game - what memorable game tho' v
