Should a player on several thousand a week be offered a testimonial? While Kev has been a great servant I don't think any player these days can justify being offered a testimonial except for those that had to retire early through injury or some other unforeseen circumstance.
 
Testimonials are normally granted for exceptional service, loyalty, commitment and ability. Over the years Kev has exhibited all of those.

In addition, money raised from such events is usually donated by the player to his chosen charity. So if Kev gets a testimonial, by attending it is an opportunity for us to thank him for what he has done for the club and to support a worthy cause as well.

The practice of clubs offering testimonials began at a time when footballers were paid very little tarted at a time when player compensation, even those at top professional clubs, was at a level that made it difficult to maintain it as a primary form of employment therefore retirement savings might not exist.

You are right as far as you go. But your reasoning fails to mention that testimonials were introduced in order to provide a kind of pension at a time when even footballers at the highest level earned very little. Of course some footballers do use some, or even all, of the money generated by a testimonial to support worthy causes but there is absolutely no requirement to do so.

Kev has been a great servant but that is not the point. Generating money for any wealthy professional footballer who is not even at the end of his career doesn't sit quite right with me.

Yes of course historically that was the case but if you look at most recent testimonials (last 10 years, say) for well regarded players funds raised have been used to benefit charities. Why should it be different in Kev's case?

Time will tell but I can't see any reason for being so negative at this stage.

Let's agree to disagree. Just because I disagree with you, and possibly the views of others, doesn't make my point any less valid or for you to ask whether my name is Victor. For the record it is not. I thought the purpose of this forum was to exchange views but if that is not the case then there is no point anyone bothering to post.
 
I think it is a good thing to recognise the contribution a player has made to a club over a number of years. However, it shouldn't be a pension pot for already well paid players.

Unlike many mercenaries who have played for the club and mediocre players on a high wage, it would be good to celebrate a whole hearted player who joined us during a difficult time and served us with humility and commitment. Well done to Kev, testimonial or not. A few more like him and Huds we could do with. Never let the team down on OR OFF the field.

What I don't understand is your refusal to acknowledge that testimonials honour a player's service to a club and the proceeds can be used to benefit deserving charities. Where is the problem in that?

How do you know the proceeds from a testimonial will be used to benefit local charities? As I said in an earlier post there is absolutely no requirement for donations to be made to a local (or indeed any other) charity. I agree that it would be a good thing for the club to honour Kev perhaps in a match where the entire proceeds were to be donated to local charities but that, as I understand it, is not the intention. Any contributions made from the testimonial will be entirely at Kev's discretion and it is that with which I disagree.
 
I'm sure he'll do a job for them.

not the first to tread that path in recent years though Jo Lewis came back.

yep. I know Kev wasn't offered a new contract. Joe on a COLE (career opportunities lie elsewhere). Not involved at Forrest Green and won't be going to Shrewsbury which means he's not in Slade's plans.
