I've always thought Smalling should play alongside Vidic, and Evans should only really play alongside Rio. That gives you the best balance in defence - if you play Evans alongside Vidic he suffers without Rio there to keep things calm and get a hold of the ball on the floor. That said, on the evidence of this performance Smalling now has to be ahead of Evans in the pecking order. Touch wood I'm not speaking too soon...
Yeah, was just about say yeah, Smalling is in the ferdinand mould, Very comfortable on the ball, and has a natural pace where he takes big strides whereby he doesn't need to sweat or sprint to run fast. He reminds me of Pique alittle bit with his distibution actually.
