From the HDM: "Mr Geraghty said he hoped the show proves to be the spur for more boxing events in the city. He said: "We want to make it an annual event. This is the start of many more shows. "In the 1970s and 1980s we used to have the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) semi-finals and we hosted Great Britain v America, which we won 10-0. "City hall was packed to the rafters that night. "This is a boxing city, not just a rugby league city and I think we can go back to that again." ........there really should be a cut off age for councillors.
Or a better standard of councillor for the public to vote for. The people of his ward chose him to represent them and if you dont like it and live in Hull then why dont you run?
You either need time or money to be able to be a councillor full time, which is why you get a lot of councillors that are usually one of 3 things: 1: retired. 2: work part-time but earn enough to be a councillor too, or 3: are a councillor but have no free time to make a difference as earning a living takes priority. More bizarre was that he was made the porfolio holder for culture and tourism, many say Del Boy was more cultured.
Memo to Geraghty: "Saying "This is a boxing city, not just a rugby league city" is like saying "This is a Welsh Nationalist city, not just a UKIP city", you daft ****"
But my point was people ALWAYS moan about councillors in Hull when it is in their hands. The vast majority dont vote which there is literally no excuse for and if they're that appalled then offer an alternative by running.
There are quite a few who did what you suggest and others that stood on single issues. Each found the same thing. You cannot take on the existing nub of dinosaurs that extend beyond Guildhall. Anyone with a bit of experience of local politics would spot it. Forget party politics, it doesn't take too much to work out that some people join the labour party to increase their chances of being a part of that nub, irrespective of their actual political persuasion. There are plenty of reasons for not voting, so excuses aren't needed.
Well let's just give up trying to change anything in the world then eh? I mean, how can you tackle slavery or women not having the vote? They're nothing compared to winning a few votes in Drypool....
There's more slavery now than there was pre-Wilberforce and his political actions resulted in animosity between Europe and Africa as it restricted its historic trading position and also delayed child labour laws in this country by several generations meaning 1000's of children suffered needlesly, so that was a poor example, but in any event, thinking not being in politics means you're in no position to change anything shows a lack of understanding of how the processes work. Another example of the state of local politics is that the politicians that opened the KC stadium and have their names etched on the obelisk are the ones that objected to it. I guess principles mean little compared to cutting the tape and having your name in stone. Generally, politicians can obstruct and delay, but rarely are they the ones that drive the changes.
He is living in bridlington having recently retired as landlord of the Kings Arms pub in the town. The pub has lots of boxing memorbillia and photos, a great bloke.
I worked on that and it definitely had Pat Doyle's name on it. The whole reason it was commissioned was cos Colin Inglis wanted to ensure Labour and particularly Pat's vision was recognised and not stolen by the Lib Dems for political point scoring.
That's as maybe, but it still has names of people that objected to it. Bit of a PR coup for the opposition and a PR slap for those that worked toward it. Neither of which alters the rest of my reply.
A long winded reference to the present world slavery situation does not undermine the fact I was clearly making that if people sat back thinking nothing would ever change then it wont.
Like anyone but the tenth rate local politicos give a **** about who supported it and who didn't? The usual myopic in-house bickering that has held this city back for decades.
Can we not be a boxing, rugby and football city? And Ice Hockey as well, weve got 2 Super League teams, a upper Championship team a booming boxing scene and a top flight Ice Hockey team, why not embrace all these teams instead of petty, pathetic squabbling?
