According to Capello John Terry (captain-leader-legend) should still be playing international football. Still one of the best centre half's in the business at 34. Capello goes on at length to explain why. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32330539
It was always going to be impossible for the FA to have a guy who'd been banned for racially abusing an opponent as the England captain. What Terry did may be acceptable to some people but civilised society has moved on. Good player though.
The ban was enforced by the FA even though he was cleared in court. They created the situation. Placed thereselves above the law of the land. Still, this has already been debated to death.
It's been done to death but that's a very one-eyed way of looking at it. You could just as easily say a court didn't have sufficient evidence to convict (rather than burying your head in the sand with a mentality of not guilty and innocent being the same thing) and then the FA went with what was the likeliest course of events. Terry's own version wasn't particularly credible.
I'm not saying that's my view. Just saying that sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "lalalalala" when anyone suggests Terry isn't whiter than white is a bit silly, as Ossie does.
The problem is when you have players past and present like Rooney, Rio, Gerrard, Adams all playing for England despite having blots and (alleged in some cases like Terry) incidents against their name, smacks of hypocrisy to suddenly hold just Terry up to this moral candle. He should still be playing because he is the best we have and has served the ban deemed fitting by the governing body. I'm glad he's not though. Means his career with us has been prolonged and he doesn't have to suffer abuse from morons when representing his country.
I blame the parents. Any Father who lets Jody Morris be your son's roll model needed to pay more attention.
C100YOH, the FA was getting it's petty revenge for the JT led revolt at the World Cup in South Africa.
The FA overlooked a number of Terry's indiscretions and allowed him to remain as captain but calling another player a black **** was a step too far. Lots of people find langauge like that offensive, including some players and fans, so there was no way he could remain as England captain. Banging team mates girlfriends, shagging prostitutes, getting pissed, beating up DJs who don't like Phil Collins, they're all non football related matters. Racism is an issue that football is still trying to address. How could the FA retain what little credibility they have if they allowed Terry to stay on as England captain after they'd suspended him for four matches? With regards to whether he should still be playing, didn't he retire from international duty because the FA wouldn't condone his use of the term black **** when addressing another footballer? If he still made himself available for selection then he would probably be in the current team.
Irrelevant. TE="Archers Road, post: 7828925, member: 1009562"]'Orrible **** though.[/QUOTE] Irrelevant.
I agree re the captaincy. England captain should as far as is practical be someone of more moral fibre shall we say. The fact It's been Rooney and Gerrard since though..... And as for football related matters, Rio was captain despite a football related drug ban.
