Liverpool explosion: Three arrested under Terrorism Act after car blast at hospital

Three men have been arrested under the Terrorism Act after a man was killed in a car explosion outside Liverpool Women's Hospital.

Counter-terrorism police said the men - aged 29, 26 and 21 - had been held in connection with the incident which happened just before 11:00 GMT.

The passenger of the car - said to be a taxi - was declared dead at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

The male driver was injured and is in hospital in a stable condition.

Detectives from Counter Terrorism Police North West said the men were detained in the Kensington area of the city.

They added they were continuing to "keep an open mind about the cause of the explosion" and were working with Merseyside Police as the investigation continued "at pace".

Armed officers have carried out raids on a property in Rutland Avenue near Sefton Park, and also in Boaler Street in Kensington. Police have not confirmed if the raids are related to the blast at the hospital.

BBC correspondent Phil McCann later said armed officers and specialist police negotiators had arrived at a street near Sefton Park.

Awful stuff. From reading that, raids taking place and things moving at 'pace' would suggest they know who they are looking for in addition to those already detained. Hopefully they catch the ****ers asap.

Seen rumours that the driver saw the bomb and locked the passenger in.
    That would be a win.

There are rumours they were heading to the Catherdral but got stuck in traffic so asked driver to take them there. Not sure if that is people putting 2 and 2 together with it going off at 1059 hrs on rememberence Sunday or from the driver.

Well done that Taxi Driver, showed some balls if what’s been reported is true. Saved a lot of lives, this could have been an horrific tragedy on what should be a day of remembrance. These terrorist scumbags will never win, nothing but a bunch of cowardly rats that will scurry of to their gutters

A Liverpool taxi driver's "heroic efforts" averted what could have been an "awful disaster" on Remembrance Sunday, the city's mayor has said.

His cab pulled up outside Liverpool Women's Hospital and exploded just before 11:00 GMT, as the national two minutes' silence was due to begin.

Joanne Anderson praised the cabbie, named locally as David Perry, for "locking the doors" before the blast.

The taxi passenger died at the scene and Mr Perry was taken to hospital.

Ms Anderson said he was not thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries and was recovering.

The dead passenger has not yet been formally identified.

Three men have been arrested under the Terrorism Act, while MI5 is assisting regional counter-terrorism police.

"The taxi driver in his heroic efforts has managed to divert what could have been an absolutely awful disaster," said Ms Anderson.

"We knew the taxi driver had stood out; the taxi driver locked the doors.

    "Our thanks go to him."

Detectives from Counter Terrorism Police North West said three men - aged 29, 26 and 21 - were detained in the Kensington area of the city late on
