By Chris Young Published on Monday 30 April 2012 09:31 MICHAEL Turner is confident Martin OâNeillâs summer spending spree will rejuvenate the feelgood factor on Wearside after the tepid conclusion to the campaign continued. Sunderlandâs winless run extended to six games on Saturday after a brace from January transfer target Kevin Davies earned third bottom Bolton a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. Davies could well be one of those on OâNeillâs radar again this summer, with the Black Cats boss coy in his post-match comments on the 35-year-old. Centre-half Turner expects Sunderland to be active in the transfer market, with on-loan duo Wayne Bridge and Sotirios Kyrgiakos the sole arrivals during OâNeillâs tenure at the club. But Turner stressed that Sunderland still need to focus on providing some cheer from the remaining two games of this season â starting with Sundayâs trip to mid-table peers Fulham - after taking just three points from strugglers Wolves, Aston Villa and Bolton. Turner told the Echo: âIâm sure the manager will bring in a few players that will excite the fans. âHeâs only brought two players in on loan so Iâm sure heâll look to bring in players during the summer. But thereâs still two games in this campaign and we need to finish the season right. âWe would have hoped for more from the last three games. Theyâre ones we should have been winning. The tally weâve picked up during this period is disappointing. âThe seasonâs petering out, but we still want to finish as high up as possible. We donât want to count down the minutes until another game is out the way. Itâs important we perform well and if we do that, we should win some games. âFulham have had some great results at home and theyâve got some great players. We know weâll need to play well next weekend.â Sunderland provided some solace on Saturday after ending their goal drought of more than six hours as strikes from Nicklas Bendtner and James McClean cancelled out Daviesâ opener. But the England international lost the attention of Matt Kilgallon to head home an equaliser with 20 minutes to go after Sunderland had looked in control. âAt least weâve started scoring again and two goals at home should be enough really,â added Turner. âSeb (Larsson) not being there gave James the opportunity to take a free-kick and showed what heâs all about. âWe didnât start the game well and it was disappointing to go behind. Passes were going astray and we couldnât hold the ball up. âBut there was a point in the first half after we scored when we got on the front foot again and could have scored a few more. âWe went ahead in the second half and looked in control, but then we conceded a poor equaliser. Maybe we could have pushed up a bit more as a back four. âIt was a great ball in to be fair and itâs a difficult one to defend, particularly when Davies is all over you.â
To be honest syd I think Turner will be one of those to go in the Summer, also reckon that Bridge and the Greek will be sent back as well. So the team rebuilding will need to be wholesale again as we are weak in all areas bar goalies, that's assuming Gordon stays mind.
I think Turner will stay but wont be first choice, Bramble out and O'Shea and Brown first choice, if we can keep them fit. The Greek and Bridge I would expect to have their tickets home booked.
Weak in all areas ?????? Do you really think so ?....I dont...I happen to think we are exceptionally strong on the wings at the mo with Larrson and McClean. Also think we re pretty strong in central midfield at no point this season do I think our midfield has let us down with the exception of the Everton tie at our place. We need to strengthen at Left Back and a 15 plus a season striker
Larsson and McClean get injured mate who do we have? We need CB x 2, LB as you say, CM playmaker, wingers both sides and the all important 15 plus striker plus another striker. We have got to get a very good squad in place as with a couple of injuries we are pants.
