There are several articles in this week-end's papers about team selection at top clubs and who really are the players who make the difference. The point being made is that it is not the fan's favourites or the players who catch the eye who make a difference over the season. what matters is who earns the most points. So at Tottenham it is not Bale who counts moat it is Dembele. At Man Utd it is not Rooney or Van Persie it is Evans who makes the difference. Several managers swear by points earned per player as the main criterion for team selection.
So who makes the difference for Gills in terms of points earned per game? Well I have just worked it out using the starting XI for each league game this season (minimum starts 10)

    2.20 Allen
    2.17 Kedwell
    2.12 Frampton
    2.07 Payne
    2.00 Flanagan
    1.97 Fish
    1.97 Martin
    1.89 Nelson
    1.89 Weston
    1.85 Whelpdale
    1.82 Barrett
    1.80 Lee
    1.75 Legge
    1.75 Montrose
    1.70 Davies
    1.60 Burton
Interesting stuff and all fact based rather than opinion.

Interesting that Charlie Allen is top now, but it is where he was involved in nearly all the games at the start of the season where we were playing brilliant and on a great run, he was also playing at his best then.

Its football's version of "chicken and egg." Is the score high because they played when the team was in good form or was the form good because the players who earn the most points were selected at that time?

bristol407 - sorry I think I might have misunderstood the scenario, I thought this was average team points earned per appearance, hence why Framps would be so high?

brb . Correct. If my maths are correct Frampton has made the starting line up on 16 occasions which matches have generated 34 points. Hence he score 2.12. It is quite a surprise who figures where and sometimes it backs up MA's selection and for some others it suggests he has got it wrong (or at least he prefers his judgement to factual evidence).

Thanks. I suppose the most obvious one to me is Keds. Because it was well known at one time that every time he did not start we did not win. Also I saw some stats today that suggested Weston had by far the highest number of assists. As for Allen despite his critics, I quite like his contribution, just sometimes wished it was a bit more controlled.

People are inclined to knock Keds but the stats tell a different tale. If you study the team performances it is always better with Kedwell measured by goals per game, points earned or defeats avoided. There has only been one defeat when he has started. With his physique he has to play every week to be match fit or join another club, there is no point giving him the odd game.
