Just recieved a prog in the mail

    Swans side was:

    Crudgington
    Attley
    Bartley
    Charles
    Phillips
    Rushbury
    Craig
    Mahoney
    Toshack
    Waddle
    Callaghan

how do you rate that side against todays side remembering the 30 year difference?

It'd probably be a better judge to do it against the team we had when we gained promotion. Dai Davies, Jimmy, Ante, Latchford, Curtis, Robbie James etc.

Agree, the team against Leeds Aug '81 would have been more like for like. But saying that, Premier league v 1st division of that time, maybe different animal!! Good team that of '79 though, Craig, Geoff Crudge & Waddle were certainly favourites of mine. Still remember us winning promotion at the Vetch May '79, beating Chesterfield 2-1, Toshack scoring the winner from a towering header.....

Yeah, I was on the North Bank when Danny Bartley took the free kick and Tosh headed it powerfully into the net !

Mustyfrog - I'm surprised that Robbie wasn't in the team.

Haha! I wish I could join in with the nostalgia without the drawbacks of age... Is that a fair wish?

I think you'll always favour your boyhood heroes won't you? I know these boys have got us to the Prem but a lot of fans in their 20's now will say in years to come: "They aren't a scratch on Trundle!" or "Bodde was the best we'v ever seen." No matter who comes in. Somewhere deep down you still see these players as heroes because you grew up believing in them!

I don't care how quick the game is, there is no substitute for quality and Tosh's boys had QUALITY. Curtis; Robbie James; Leighton James; Latchford; Jimmy Hab; Ante, Mahoney and we had decent players in every other position bar the keeper (sorry Dai). Old Swans a good two goals better than the present team. Not being nostalgic just realistic.

we could do with a Tommy Smith and a Bob Latchford today... they would do the Biz no matter how quick the game was.
The Anfield iron would get his man eventually - no matter how fast they were. Remember Ozzy....... <laugh>

Robbie James looks like he played the first four games of the season and was replaced in the starting lineup by a Mr J Toshack. Interesting attendance figures for the season to date - Bournemouth League Cup 1st rd, 1st leg 13,500, 1st League match v Shrewsbury 17,400, and Burnley 18,300 - how many fans did the Vetch hold during the standing days?

more to come when i receive my 1964-65 progs

The record attendance was 32000 and something against Arsenal not long after WWII if my memory serves correctly, although Health & Safety would bust a nut if it was recreated today!

The Vetch deteriorated over time. One of the double decker stands had to be made into a single due to H&S concerns, and the terracing on the North Bank had boards stopping people from using the rear half(ish) limiting the capacity further. We did, however, get the boards moved back a bit during our last season there boosting the capacity a bit, which allowed for bigger crowds during a period when we really did need the fans.

The match against Arsenal was in 1968. I remember sitting on the small "wall" at the front of the North Bank. We lost 1-0. I think Bobby Gould scored for Arsenal.

It's diffucult to say. I think our largest crowd in the old 1st division was in the region of 23,000. But that was after the 'new' east stand was built!! The season of 1979, we might still have had the 'old' east terrace, with railway sleepers. So maybe you cram more on a terrace!! Of course in all those day's, we had the West stand double-decker & I'm sure the north bank held over 12,000 alone!! Maybe the capacity was still in the region of late 20's to 30. I think it was still around 20,000 until after Hillsborough. But not totally sure mate...

The record attendance was in the late sixties, 32,000 odd as Scottswan alluded. An FA cup tie!!

Arsenal match .... Very cramped indeed. The 32786 number was the official attendance at an all ticket game. But I remember seeing people slipping cash at the turnstiles and then jumping over them, so the real attendance was much more.
