Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is hoping to make a shock return to action before the end of the season.

Taylor was expected to miss the rest of the campaign after undergoing Achilles surgery last month.

The 25-year-old suffered the injury against Chelsea and the central defender has been sorely missed by Alan Pardew's side.

Taylor is determined to prove the medical experts wrong and be back playing at the end of May with the home clash with Manchester City in mind.

"I know Newcastle expect me to be out for the rest of the season, but I am hoping to be back for the penultimate match of the season against Manchester City in May," Taylor told the Sunday People.

"You have got to have goals in life. And that's mine.

"And if I was to get back it would give me a massive boost and peace of mind throughout the close season."

Hardly worth rushing back for the end of May IMO

I'd love to see where we'd be now if he hadn't got injured, I can say one thing for sure and thats that our goals against column would be a lot less.

Even if he comes back Pardew probably won't see the point in playing him for one of two games, might as well get him fully fit. Good to see he's setting himself targets though. Can't believe he was being such an idiot over his contract a couple of years back as he clearly loves playing for us - hopefully he'll be a lifer now.
