The renowned Book 1 Yearling Sale gets underway today. It is literally dripping with gorgeous pedigrees. As with the Orby Sale I'm lifting the summary and lots to watch from today's EBN:

BLUE BLOODS APLENTY ON OFFER AT BOOK 1

Full-brothers to multiple Gr.1 winners Ghaiyyath (Lot 92) and Waldgeist (Lot 284) and a half-brother to Golden Horn (Lot 482) are among the potentially star-studded catalogue for Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. This takes place over the next three days, with sessions starting at 11:00am, and all 549 catalogued lots are eligible for the £20,000 Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonus scheme, which has paid out close to £7m to date.

The catalogue includes full/half-siblings to 61 Classic or Gr.1 winners and 223 Group/Listed winners. There are 14 yearlings out of Classic/Gr.1-winning mares and more than a third of the yearlings catalogued are by the top ten sires currently standing in Europe, among them 26 by Dubawi, 28 by Frankel, 31 by Kingman, 38 by Lope De Vega, 31 by Sea The Stars, 26 by Siyouni and 17 by Galileo.

First-crop stallions represented include Classic/Gr.1 winners Advertise, Blue Point, Crystal Ocean, Magna Grecia, Masar, Study Of Man, Ten Sovereigns, Too Darn Hot and Waldgeist. The largest consignment comes from last year’s sale-topping Newsells Park Stud, which will offer a team of 30 yearlings, followed by Baroda Stud and Highclere Stud, which both have 24 lots catalogued.

Five yearlings achieved seven-figure prices at last year’s sale and a further 25 made more than 500,000gns. Top of the pile were two fillies from Newsells Park Stud; a Sea The Stars filly out of Best Terms, who went to Godolphin for 1,500,000gns, while Al Shira’aa Farms bought a Dubawi half-sister to Waldgeist for 1,350,000gns. Both have siblings in this week’s sale, the Best Terms a Kingman half-brother (Lot 372) and the full-brother to Waldgeist is Lot 284.

The 2021 sale concluded with an increased clearance rate of 83 per cent, a five-point rise in aggregate sales to 86,369,000, a small rise in the average to 230,317gns and a 23 per cent lift in the median to 160,000gns. The leading sires by average were Galileo (11 lots sold for an average 557,727gns) and Dubawi (14 sold for an average 498,929gns). The top purchaser was Godolphin, which bought 15 yearlings for an outlay of 9,375,000gns, and Newsells Park Stud led the consignors, selling 22 yearlings for an impressive total of 10,785,000gns, including four of the eight highest-priced yearlings.

Odds are that the top lot is likely to be one of the big 4 - Galileo, Frankel, Sea The Stars or Dubawi - but Lot 193 by Siyouni is likely to be near the top with Shastye's last 3 yearlings offered at this sale making 3,400,000gns, 3,400,000gns and 1,300,000gns respectively.

2,800,000 bought by Godolphin. He’s the most expensive yearling sold anywhere in the world so far this year!

Depends on the individual horse - it says on the catalogue page if VAT is included or not. All 3 of the Frankel millionaires had VAT included.

Also depends on whether the horse is for export or staying in the UK. However owners can register to reclaim VAT on purchases that stay in GB.

Here’s the VAT page from the catalogue

So this multi-million industry brings nothing into the Chancellor’s coffers? Yet the ordinary working folk pay VAT on everything they purchase. Seems wrong somehow. I’m sure Coolmore or Shake Yermoney wouldn’t miss a few quid in VAT.

Shh. It’s expensive enough without having to pay VAT on everything

    i don’t bet.

i just find it odd that these hugely expensive horses are not subject to VAT (or if they are it can be claimed back) when every loaf of bread, every apple, every packet of crisps and every pint of beer is subject to VAT.
I bet Rudey agrees with me

For cross border transactions there is often an agreement that, rather than pay VAT/TVA and claim it back, it saves work to just not charge it in the first place, as long as you are VAT/TVA registered. That's how it works here anyway
