Obviously if he's terrible and we're facing another relegation then we should consider termination, but if we don't do all that great first season, how long before we should expect achievements? What expectations should we have?

I'd say we should be happy with mid table security next season. We need to make St James Park a fortress again, and develop passion around the stadium.

Next season 10th should be the target. 8th is being hopeful. Minimum 12/13th if a decent cup run.

If he achieves the above then I'd say keep him for at least a few years and try to achieve stability.

We need to stick by a manager long term. It's best in the long run. Hopefully ashley and others have learned from mistakes and we can see consistent investment and sensible decisions made.

    Next season - 10th

Season after - Push for top 8

Aim for next 5 years - Push in Europa League.

With the funds we have available, it's not too much to ask.

I hope to see - 50k average attendances and a stadium brimming with pride and atmosphere again.

I think we shouldn't be too impatient and give him at least until mid August. If he doesn't win all the pre-season friendlies 8-0 then we should start printing the flyers again.

    He deserves 3-4 years minimum.

Like it or not West Ham, Stoke, Swansea, Southampton all have stronger squads then us. You then have Palace who are linking with Cabaye, Remy etc and already have some good attacking players. I'd be very surprised if we're able to jump from 15th to 10th in a single season.

I'd settle for 12th/13th next year with no real relegation threat. However, if we were down the bottom he still deserves 3-4 years, whoever is in charge it's always going to be a relatively "slow build" job given we won't go and spend 60m - 70m in any one season let alone in one window.

A good cup run and a boring league campaign(with entertaining football from time to time) would be good progress next year.

First target - join the club at some point before the new season starts.

Second target - ensure that the players (at least 6, net new) are actually all here before we kick off the new season.

Third target - talk to the fans regularly and without irony, bullsh!t or arrogance.

Fourth target - actually ensure he's involved in transfer targets, as in his closeness to the team is used by the w@nkers at the top.

Fifth target - don't ever, ever play any utterly sh!t players, such as Willo, Riviere or Gouffran.

Sixth target - score from a set piece. Or at least threaten to score. Also see point five - avoid "aim at Mike" as a tactic.

Seventh target - keep a clean sheet.

Eighth target - go an entire season without more than 3 shambolic embarrassments.

Ninth target - turn up to play the mackems.

Tenth target - get past the first two rounds of BOTH cups.

Eleventh target - make sure that every time the team goes out they have some idea of their roles & responsibilities, especially those to the fans, rather than looking like they met in the tunnel on the way from the pub.

Ah not this **** again. If he receives the same backing as Pardew did in the transfer market then its all a complete waste of time and no fair judgement can be made. We will always give managers plenty of time, first off its up to the board to back up their owners declarations and provide the tools. Otherwise its as much use as Obi in a very narrow alley trying to chase after a five pound note he dropped.

In reality, I don't care for league position. This season, I just want to face every weekend with a bit of love for my club and the hope, no matter how unlikely, that we can win every game. I want to think we can give everyone at least a game at SJP and adapt tactics to pull the odd surprise on the road. I want to see players playing with pride and heart, I want to see people giving performances "worth" £30k a week. Some excitement, some good results and anywhere between 15th and 1st will be fine for me.

Pride is what we need first, more or less nothing else matters.

Oh dear! Not even manager yet and he has targets! One of the main problems in this country today is bloody targets!

Surely all this depends on player recruitment? How you improve your poor squad will be a massive factor. Same for us. Would you still expect these targets if you only bring a couple of players in?

Apparently he has been given a 3 year contract which could be extended to 8. ( WTF, don't we ever learn )

Two years minimum IMO, at least we finally have a proper coach for the first time in years.

In light of the changes, give him 3. We had to suffer Pardew for four, but this time we've no clowns in the backroom and an actual manager.

Now we have a manager, and he's not the worst choice, can we all start to get randomly excited about the hundreds of players we're going to sign?

It makes no difference whatsoever unless we buy some good players. When will you people invest in some multi vitamins or get some brain food in the cupboard ffs
