Is this a facet of our game that should be allowed? Given what's happened to us in the past and what appears to be happening to Clodagh's club, should it be ok for a team to say openly that they are interested in another teams player and if not why not?
yes there is nothing wrong with showing an interest in another player, we do it all the time and so do every other club....Man city for instant have made it known that they are interested in liverpools top striker and are willing to bid £40 million for him, Brendan says he wont sell but we all know it dont work like that if the player has had his head turned like joe allens head with us, If he wants to move to man city he will go as its the players these days that have the power and not as it should be the clubs....
Showing your age there. Players agents is at it behind the scenes every day, any manager is entitled to pick the phone up and inquire about any players availability. The question is(if the story is true)who told the media? Rodgers is naive if he believes just because he says so Suarez wouldn't be allowed to leave, if City(or any club)offer £40m the money men in Boston will be twitchy as ****, you only have to look back at how quickly our yank owners took the £50m for Torres.
all managers say the same thing as they would look idiots if he says WOW £40 million ....sold....But i agree the yanks would not turn that sort of money down even if it is over the top price,,,jeez they give us £6.5 million for sinclair so they have money to burn and they do seem to pay over the odds for a player....
you can do a lot with £40 million, I would not be surprised if he came in for michu from us if he does sell suarez...
I honestly think Brendan know's hes burnt his bridges with the Swans Dai, he knows that not just Swans fans won't wear us going for more of your players we ourselves won't.
I think that burning bridges with the Swans isn't really an issue with Rodgers. More pertinent, as Kopite says, is how he would be perceived by the Liverpool fans. I don't feel confident that he would hold back, but there's got to be a part of him that's aware the Liverpool fans and commentators will be sensitive to this. It's very easy for commentators to latch on to the idea that he isn't imaginative in the transfer market and then it's a label that will stick to him. When he shapes his persona as carefully as he does, I imagine that would be a real concern to him. Likewise, it's easy for Liverpool fans to worry about the idea that their club should be looking to emulate a newly promoted club. Still, I don't think it would stop him from persuing a player he wants from us, but it would be in his thinking. The fact he's starting to get linked to Tom Ince is interesting, because it's still aplayer he was chasing with us. Tapping up is worrying but a part of the game. If Liverpool become unhappy at Man City, then they need to apologise to the Swans, but then we would have to apologise to Valencia over Hernandez (I suspect) and on and on.
michu is a new player and does not count as a player he could not come in for.....michu and the rest of the new players are not part of the gentleman's agreement......give us £20 million and you can have him..
Too true Dai. Like I say, I can't help but feel a similar thing happened with Hernandez. To survive in the Prem, to a degree, we have to be ruthless. To a degree.
Its a nasty business these managers are in and they are paid to get the best they can. If Brendan thinks that he will keep suarez if suarez is keen to go then he is mistaken, I can understand him saying it though as all managers say the same thing...
january will throw up some interesting moves and i hope a few comes our way and we dont lose anyone except the surplus to requirements....
There are two issues: contact / communication between clubs behind closed doors; broadcasting bullshit in the media. The former is standard business practice - there is nothing wrong with executive interaction on all aspects of running a football club including player availability. The latter, IMO, serves no business purpose, is destructive to elements of a club's ecosystem (players, fans) and only serves to keep reporters in a job. There should be clear rules on what can be placed in the public domain and at what time, by those parties that can be controlled by the sport.
It's true. Even sneakily contacting a player behind the scenes is actually better than the sly comments in the press to try to build up a clamour for the player to move. I.e prompting commentators to say that Allen would be mad not to give it a go etc etc. Once the momentum builds there, then it very rarily subsides. Very manipulative.
I think less than that, I think we will have a job to hold on to him at the end of the season if the big boys come calling....
I'm not sure how he would fit in with the really big teams, I'll be honest. Although if Everton lose Fellaini I could see how he could work there. Anyhoo, let's not worry about that now. Worth thinking about who we could bring in to strengthen... maybe a striker, certainly a CB (hopefully one that can play across the back) and one more winger to allow them all to be rotated.
