When I look at the current plight of Argyle I see comparisons to Pompey and so I hope the situation at Fratton Park will continue to be one that the Green Army can relate to as the current season unfolds. Take a club that has gone into administration; has been unable to pay its players; has been deducted points; that has been relegated; that is struggling at the bottom of its new division; that is praying that a take-over will be completed before the wolves start hammering at the door once more. That club could be Pompey a year ago or Argyle today. It's just under a year ago that this was the main banner on the BBC Football site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/p/portsmouth/9120108.stm The bottom of the Championship last season, after seven games looked like this: http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/league-championship/2010-2011/table/2010-09-18 Thankfully our take-over went though and we were saved. That seemed to give the side the greater morale and confidence to dig themselves out of the hole and climb clear of the relegation places. Confidence and morale hold the key to turning it around. If players want to go to training instead of seeing it as a chore they [like any-one else in any other job] are going to be more productive. This will come with the finalisation of a takeover which will enable the club to exit admin. If that extra confidence can turn half a dozen losses into draws and half a dozen draws into wins, that's an extra 18 points on the board [Pompey ended up finishing 16 points clear of the drop zone] I sincerely hope the comparisons between Pompey last year and Argyle today will continue!
Unfortunately I think Pompey were a much more attractive club to potsential suitors than Argyle are now. Recent Premiership club and F.A. Cup winners, and sorry to be harsh, but the Pompey fans seemed more organised and passionate about saving their club. We are now 92nd out of 92 in the Football League with a snake firmly ensconced in the hot-seat.
