I feel sorry for all concerned: David Holmes was a 38-year-old from Norwich UK, the City I happen to live in. One day in 2013 he was on his way back from Kings Lynn to Norwich, a journey of about 40 miles. He had been with friends so was in good spirits. He was killed when a driver turned across the road in front of him. His Mother has just authorised the release of a video which contains footage from the crash, with the intention of serving as a warning to others. There is no doubt he was riding too fast, he was travelling at 97mph at the time of the crash, but he certainly didn't deserve to die that day. The driver of the Renault Clio admitted that they hadn't seen David or the car behind him. The video isn't graphic/gory, but really is more hard-hitting than I expected. Jump to 2:45 if you just want to see the crash.
Inquest said the driver of the Clio could and should have seen the bike for 7 seconds. That seems like a long time but it's so easily done. This is the mess the Clio was left in. please log in to view this image
He didn't deserve to die.But he did make a big contribution to it.Motor bikes need to ride with their headlight on.I doubt he did or the driver would have seen him.At the speed he was going seven seconds before the crash, assuming 40mph for the Clio the two would have been more than a quarter of a mile apart. If he had been doing 60mph it almost certainly would not have happened.
File under Darwin Awards. If you approach a crossroads on a motorbike at almost 100mph, you're asking for it.
My thought when I saw him approaching the junction was that I wouldn't rely on the car driver having seen me and would have been on the brakes a hundred yards earlier.Of course had he done that by the time he arrived the Clio would have turned in and he could probably have swerved round the back.May well have come off but gravel rash is far better than pulling into Deadsville Central.
My initial thought is **** anyone that rides a motorbike. The only good thing about them is they keep my mate in his job as an intensive care nurse.
2011 UK deaths from motorcycle accidents 362 UK deaths from ecstasy or ecstasy-like drugs 6 UK deaths from legal highs emulating ecstasy 20 There are zero practical benefits to riding a motorbike except dickhead ones - "I can zoom through traffic jams, I can feel the wind on my skin" It's a stupid thing to do and if only some brown people were making money out of it, it'd be illegal.
