We are in a very similar situation to 1964 the only difference to now is that Jackie Milburn chose to do the decent thing and resigned. This current manager has the potential to become the worst Town manager ever if he is not forced out over the next week. In fact so far this season Jewell's home record is worse than Milburn's so how can he be allowed to carry on? Bill McGarry was a tough disciplinarian but he got the best out of the players he inherited and after a few years he guided us to the 1967/68 League 2 Title. The big difference with today is that back then we didn't have 7 loanees playing for the club and we had a wonderful chairman in John Cobbold. Change is desperately needed now if we are to avoid relegation this season. http://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich...ipswich_town_s_similar_woes_of_1964_1_1652045 10 Years ago today George Burley was sacked in the biggest act of vandalism that Sheepshanks ever comitted at this club! Burley didn't get much time to turn it around did he and yet we give this current clown all the time in the world it seems! http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/21627/town-topic-ten-years-after
We are a million miles away from this:
Well flap me sideways JWM, I never realised that 'Wor Jackie' managed Town. Evidently he wasn't as great a manager as he was a player then ?
To be fair KIO, Jackie inherited the team from Alf Ramsey who by then had left for the England job. When Jackie came in at first alongside Alf, the two men didn't get on and Alf excluded Jackie from much of the team decisions. The team by then was a shadow of its former self with quite a few ageing players like Jimmy "Sticks" Leadbeater who were by then getting on a bit. The one great thing that Jackie did was to establish the Ipswich youth system and the belief in bringing through young talented players into the first team. This will always remain his lasting legacy eventhough these ****ers in charge now are doing their best to destroy it!
While I agree it was a disgrace to sack Burley, at least Sheepshanks got it right with the replacement. Royle was a v.good choice. Under the current regime, Magilton was sacked as the club were bringing in a "big name manager" - when he who shall not be named was appointed, I feared for the future of the club. Fast forward almost 2 years (where only ex Sunderland or Irish players were considered in the transfer market) we get landed with PJ. I have to admit that I was in favour of the appointment because at least this was a manager rather than an ex-player (I remember Bryan robson being linked a couple of times with this job - even worse than what we have). Then begins the dealings - over 30's & loan players only.
