I was wondering why Diving is considered wrong immoral and dirty cheating and should be stamped out of the game according to fans, commentators and pundits.

Yet when a team is on the counter and the defence is overwhelmed a player will purposefully commit a foul and take a yellow card and that is considered a good move or one that should be commended especially by commentators in the game.

Both are cheating to gain an advantage so why is tackling commended and diving condemned. I think both are as bad as each other and should both be condemned so why the disparity? Is it because the foul is normally carded while a dive may go unnoticed?

For me, diving is seeking to gain an advantage at the cost of the other player as they're the one who gets punished whereas with cynical fouls/tugs etc you know you're getting yourself in trouble and accepting the cost. Both are obviously wrong as per the rules of the game but only one leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.

Even if this was true it doesn't apply to tackling where it is generally universally accepted to be ok to cheat, if pires made that tackle like song and other foreign players have done they are still not vilified

Thats exactly what the foul does in fact it could be considered far worse as tackle intended to foul can lead to injuries for the player being fouled. I really think they are as bad as each other

I thought you were talking about cynical tugs on the shirt/ blocking people off etc as opposed to cleaning someone out who's breaking free! When someone has just skipped past you and you grab their shirt you do so in the knowledge that you will pick up a booking but will probably stop the attack. Unless the shirt belongs to Djibrill Cisse the fouled player will probably be ok ;)

Very different if you knowingly decide to Shawcross someone.

However, I do agree with your point that both are wrong. Just offering an insight into why some feel one is more acceptable than the other.

    JJSB has it spot on

The professional foul results in punishment guaranteed to the perpetrator, a dive usually ends up in an innocent party being punished and the diver gaining some sort of advantage in the form of a sending off/caution or penalty.

Both the cleaning someone out as well as the wrecking ball tackle, I get what you mean thats why i raised the question I wanted insights and opinions. Just for me i don't see the difference in terms of public condemnation. Could it also be that diving is potentially something new (with extensive TV coverage now days) while tackling has always been part of the game

What about claiming for throw ins and corners that you knw isint yours? For me that just as worse and find myself shouting at the TV when someone does it when it clearly came of there boot.

We all know the old school british press are inherently racist. This is where the issue lies.

The fouling when someones on the break is a professional risk, a yellow card for a silly foul, or 3/4 players against 1 defender and your keeper, not cheating, just playing smartly.

Diving is purely cheating, your trying to get a player sent off for doing nothing, or gain a penalty for nothing

Don't get me wrong i hate it when players dive and i don't like to see arsenal player's diving but when you are getting kicked for 90 mins like arsenal have been for the past few seasons then by all means make it obvious to the referee that you are being fouled. Especially with all the shirt pulling etc that goes on in the box, referees seem to just except that as part of the game, and i also hate it when a player obstructs an opponent when he is clearly beaten and the commentator says that he is "taking one for the team" its complete rubbish.

And yes of course they are not going to say anything negative against there own english internationals, this is england and they are will never say anything against there own players, that is why england will never win a major tournament, because the media warps the mind of the country by letting them believe that the players are better than what they actually are, if an english player is above average then he is labelled "world-class" thats why the english keep producing mediocre players.

Here is where I would disagree I see no difference 1 is cheating to gain an advantage knowing you are doing something wrng so is the other. I would akin it to a comparison between perjoury and breaking and entering both different and wrong hard to argue which is worse.

By your definition of a foul being smart you could say diving is smart.

While I don't disagree with this they don't seem to criticise foreign players for these type of fouls either song Ramirez Lucas etc have all done it and been told it is smart play.

I think the main difference is the deception, with the foul, your not trying to hide it or cheat, your simply saying look ref, yes i barged him over but i had no choice give me a card.

Diving your saying "REFF SEND HIM OFF, PENALTYY" when there was nothing
    unsporting!
