Taarabt pleads with QPR gaffer Warnock to protect him from abuse

Oct 30 2011 by Dean Jones, The People

ADEL TAARABT has pleaded with QPR manager Neil Warnock to stand up for him more – after taking stick from senior team-mates, including Joey Barton.

The gifted but unpredictable star is unhappy with some of the verbal goading he has been subjected to, and sought out his boss to let his feelings be known.

Controversial Taarabt, 22, thinks Warnock should bring the other players into line and tell them not to ‘pick’ on him so much.

Taarabt has been his own worst enemy at times but he was unsettled by the way he took abuse for recent displays – and was removed from penalty duties in last week’s home win over Chelsea.

Barton and veteran Shaun Derry forcibly stopped Taarabt claiming the ball, just one of many examples of when he has been put in his place.

The moody Moroccan returns to White Hart Lane with QPR today, determined to prove he could have made the grade in north London.

    Fruitcake

And Harry Redknapp admits he has been worried about Taarabt haunting him ever since he left Tottenham.

The Spurs boss, who let him join Rangers in August 2010, said: “In the end it was difficult and I didn’t really want to get rid of him, to be honest.

“I was scared to let him go because I always thought he would come back to haunt me or bite me.

“I don’t know the deal but if it was £1million, I know the chairman got a big sell-on because we were always afraid that he could progress.

“His skill is frightening and he could be a great player – maybe one day he will be.

“He’s a bit of a fruitcake but what’s he worth now?

“When he came here they called him the next Zidane. He isn’t in the same league as Zidane because he was a genius.

“But one day he could be up there because he’s got that ability.”

Harry Redknapp: QPR midfielder Adel Taarabt can be new Zinedine Zidane or Paolo Di Canio

Harry Redknapp has likened Queens Park Rangers midfielder Adel Taarabt to both Zinedine Zidane and Paolo Di Canio but has warned his former player that he is in danger of squandering his supreme talent.

The Spurs manager sold Taarabt to QPR in 2010 after the playmaker failed to break into his first team and he will line up against his former club for the first time today when Neil Warnock’s side visit White Hart Lane.

Unable to fit the midfielder into his first team, Redknapp allowed Taarabt to leave but did so with a heavy heart given his undoubted natural ability.

Question marks remain over his discipline, but such issues are not new to Redknapp, who learned all about managing complex characters while in charge of a West Ham side which boasted Di Canio in its forward line.

Blazing rows were not uncommon between the manager and Di Canio, who once sat down in the middle of the pitch begging Redknapp to be substituted after being denied what he thought were blatant penalties in a 5-4 victory over Bradford in 2000.

Taarabt’s current rapsheet, which includes leaving this season’s defeat at Fulham on a bus after being booked at half-time, has definite shades of Di Canio and Redknapp believes the 22 year-old has the talent to match.

But while Redknapp is wary of the Moroccan’s impact in today’s clash, the manager is equally aware that he could ultimately go down as a wasted talent.

"Taarabt has unbelievable ability but I think this year he has found it a bit harder," he said. "He could play anywhere, he has got that much talent, it’s just whether or not his head is right.

"I didn’t really want to get rid of him to be honest. I was scared to let him go because I always thought he would come back to haunt me. His skill is frightening and he could be a great player and maybe one day he will be.

"Either that or you will always be saying 'he could have been a great'.

"He’s got the ability of a Di Canio or someone. When he came here they called him the next Zidane. He isn’t in the same league as Zidane yet because he was a genius, but one day he could be up there because he’s got that ability.

"He’s complex but a lot of the lads with that ability can be. Di Canio was a genius but Paolo was complex. He produced on the pitch every week at West Ham, he scored magnificent goals.

"Adel has to get that consistency in his game and if he does that, he could be a top player and I’d like to see him do it because I like him as a boy."

Having taken 16 points from their last six games, only table-topping Manchester City can match Tottenham’s current form but they face a QPR side buoyed by last weekend’s 1-0 victory over their near-neighbours Chelsea.

But Redknapp could include William Gallas in his side for the first time this season following the Frenchman’s recovery from his calf injury.

Taarabt hasn't changed in the last year but Warnick's attitude towards him definitely seems to.

Taarabt needs to start doing his talking on the pitch, and, play to the level that we know he can play to. He ain't always going to get everything he wants, but a little loyalty and commitment to the cause don't half help.

Agree 100% Taarabt will be bigger than Neil Wannock in the long run

People knows how i feel about Taarabt ... we are truly lucky to have him and NW could **** that all up with his style

IMO he could walk into any big club and be coached to perfection within a few months from there his rise would be global ... On the ball he is as good as i have ever seen including a young Zidane at Bordeaux this was quoted by Arry:

“When he came here they called him the next Zidane. He isn’t in the same league as Zidane because he was a genius.

“But one day he could be up there because he’s got that ability.”

He is bang on ... Its my biggest passion to hope that we keep AT and IMO opinion we should build a team to suit the football genius he is ... without him we are very pale NW and that **** JB's ego should realise what we have got and aid and build that ... all i get from JB is tweets saying how he hates Xfactor well turn it off then How you can listen to the genius of the Smiths and then be evident watching UK Saturday Tele is the mark of a compete idiot who has no idea what the **** he is ... AT is young immature maybe and has a different culture : a bit of French in there is no bad thing I can tell you ... Who's what to be Joey Barton? He has only just discovered The Smiths he has a long way to go before he realises what a grubby little island we live on and what is the score under the surface ... Wise up NW and see what we have it worth looking after

don't get me wrong, i'd love to see adel stay indefinitely, but maybe warnock's attitude has changed because a) his patience is wearing thin and b) adel is no longer the stand out important player he was last season?

He did so much for us last season, for sure, but he really does have just a little of the Tevez in him? Just a personal opinion, but he really is a difficult character.

Ever thought that's because his confidence is being so undermined!!? Don't get me wrong, I know how immature and petulant he can be, but this has the wreak of Barton all over it. Joey wants to be the star of the show, but he has roughly a quarter of Adel's ability, so he constantly has to undermine him. Taarabt will leave in January, in part because he would have been hounded out!! This is tragic imo as I would much rather watch Adel with my season ticket than Barton!!

How many takers? Cos at the mo he's a Championship player who's not making the step up.

Yep...hounded out. Anyone can see that he is short of confidence. That's because everyone is on his back. I agree that a lot of it is HIS OWN FAULT, but I still say I'd rather watch him for my money than ANY of the other players in our squad.
I believe he's not performing because of the influence of others, NOT because he's not good enough. He's plenty good enough!!

He can't expect the mollycoddling he got last season in the Prem, simple as that.

I'll add to that, even though he was fantastic last season, he was getting away with stuff that'll get you killed in this division. If he needs a telling, but his bottom lip keeps going, what can you do?

He's our best player and I believe NW is getting it wrong! We are very short on goals and struggle to get players into the box when we attack. We NEED Adel's goals and assists OR we need to buy someone as good in January who Joey likes!!

Agree we need to get him back on form if possible, but is it all Warnock and Barton's fault?
Another scenario is, he's still sulking about his PSG move, who know's?
    I'll PM Ric-Roc;)

Youre having a laugh surely, he now realises hes not as good as he thought he was and he is being asked to help the team when his tricks dont work. Unfortunately for all of us hes not prepared to do this.Get shot of him.

    Sorry...I think that's bollocks!

I totally accept all his short-comings and that it isn't all down to NW or Barton. However, the latest article about him had him stating that he was happy here. However, what report can you trust to have got the translation right anyway?
Bottom line for me is that without him we have few goals and even less creativity. Don't forget it was his pass to SWP that led to the first Chelsea sending off! It's so obvious that he's low on confidence and I think many of you are missing the point about needing him to feel wanted and loved. It's called man-management. Last year NW got it spot on...this year he hasn't. Suppose we'll all have to agree to disagree and see how things work out!!

We are premier league club now and at best hes a top championship player. At the moment we are still short of a number of quality players but hopefully TF and NW will spend in January. The players who did so well last year are well out of there depth in this league.

Maybe we should swap him for that bloke Van Persie.
Would be a good bit of business IMO.
