    Portsmouth v Swindon Town

    League One – 18 September 2012

    Link to BBC Preview: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19554033

    Last meeting at Fratton Park
    26 December 1999 – Div 1 [Championship]
    Pompey 1-1 Swindon

    Who are Ya?
Formed in 1879, the club turned professional and joined the new Southern League in1894. They reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1910 and won the Southern League the following year. Thery played Manchester United in the 1911 Charity Shield, losing 8-4, but reached the Cup semis again that season; 1911-12.
They joined the Football League in the new Division Three South in 1920 and remained in that division for its entirety. A top half finish in 1958 meant they remained in the third tier when the Fourth Division was introduced.
They finally reached the Second Division in 1963, but were relegated after two seasons. They spent the rest of the 60s and 70s between those two divisions, before suffering their first relegation to the Fourth Division in 1982. In 1969 they won the Football League Cup. However, they were unable to play in the following season’s Inter Cities Fairs Cup [predecessor of the Europa League and UEFA Cup] as the Football League had previously signed an agreement with the organizers that only League Cup winners from the First Division would be entered.
In 1990 Swindon won the Second Division [Championship] Playoffs but were denied promotion to the top flight after admitting 36 charges of breaking league rules, 35 due to illegal payments to player. Playoff final losers Sunderland were promoted and Swindon were demoted to the Third Division, although, on appeal, they were allowed to remain in the Second. 3 years later thy won the playoffs again and finally took their place in the Premier League. Their stay at the top table lasted but a season though, finishing 10 points adrift at the bottom. The reduction of sides in the Premier League saw them relegated again the following year, after finishing 4th from bottom in Div 1, but they won Div 2 the following year to bounce back. They last played in the 2nd tier in 2004, since which time they have been in League One, with the exception of two single-season spells in League Two; the most recent being last season.
Highest League Finish: 22nd in Premier League 1994
Lowest League Finish: 17th in Fourth Division [League Two] 1984
    Honours:
    2nd Tier [Championship] Playoff winners 1990, 1993
3rd Tier [League One] winners 1996, runners up 1963, 1969, playoff winners 1987
    4th Tier [League Two] winners 1986, 2012
    League Cup winners 1969
    Anglo-Italian League Cup winners 1969, 1970

    Yesteryear
    18 December 1920 – Third Division South
    Pompey 1-1 Swindon
Honours were even in the first ever League meeting between the sides in the Third Division South’s inaugural season.

    Silver Stats – Swindon Town
    5 seasons ago [2008] – 13th in League One
    10 seasons ago [2003] – 10th in Div 2 [League One]
    15 seasons ago [1998] – 18th in Div 1 [Championship]
    20 seasons ago [1993] – 5th in Div 1 [Championship] – Play-Off Winners
25 seasons ago [1988] – 12th in Second Division [Championship]

    Random Fact:
Swindon’s first ever League fixture, on 28 August 1920 resulted in a 9-1 win over Luton Town and remains their highest ever league win.

    Match Odds (Monday at Skybet)

    Pompey 2/1
    Swindon 13/10
    Draw 12/5

    Mystic Devo
After three consecutive defeats [two in the league] Swindon came from behind twice to secure a point at Carlisle on Saturday.
Pompey’s players are huffing and puffing but not doing enough to blow the house down. It’s not more possession that wins matches – it’s GOALS. As Appy says – we need a striker!

    Devo reckons: Pompey 1-2 Swindon

I'm going for 2-1 Swindon.......... for 2 reasons,

    1. Because when I think we're going to win we don't.
    2. Because Swindon have got a manager not dissimilar to Oldham.

    Tricky match against Swindon methinks.

If we score first, di Canio may have one of his "funny turns" and provide some much needed amusement.

We do need to win this match, so it's 1-0 to Pompey <ok>

No question this will be a stern test - they are a good side and play decent football - I'd take a point happily. Be weird seeing Matt Ritchie playing for them.

I will predict that we will lose and as my predictions are about as reliable as Paul the Octopus from Seaworld at Poole, in reality we may actually get a half decent result.PUP<ok>

Keep the Optimism folks. Where's it all gone after the season's started ??

The match aint won on paper- I'm sure we can get at least a draw- if we turn up and play like we can, that is.

Di Canio's has very man management skills doesn't he ?? He's almost as bad as AVB at that aspect! .. <laugh>

Thought Swindon were excellent tonight. Can't believe we only lost 2-1 !

Some excellent saves by Andersson. Why can't we play the whole match like we did in the last 10 minutes ?!

Well I'm now half glad that I wasn't able to listen to the game.

This off-field shenanigans has got to be affecting the team - whatever anyone thinks players coming in and others leaving does upset the equilibrium. Dumbaya has admitted that it is affecting them.

I noticed a couple of comments on the News commentary that some fans have had enough and are turning their backs on the club.

We could end up down in league 2 - but (according to the laws of physics) what goes down must come up!
So I'm going to be here through thick and thin. <ok>

Who the hell turns their back on their club ??

I think we could do with losing those "fans". They'll probably end up supporting Manchester City, and then support Manchetser United or something if Unt win the Champions League! <laugh>

After City beat United 6-1 last season, my Wolves supporting mate says to me:

"City fans havent seen a win like that since they were Chelsea fans" - Absolute Legendary Line! <laugh>

    I hate "plastic" fans

Look at it this way, if those guys desert you, then maybe Brighton will be able to fill their lovely new stadium for once!
