Managers publicly own up to mistakes - Pulis on Monday as an example - and players often publicly apologise to the Club and the fans if they cock up. Only Referees are too fecking arrogant to ever admit that they got something wrong. Hooper got at least 2 critical decisions wrong. The pundits, press and ex-referees have said so so why can't he just say ' looking at it again I concede my decisions were wrong and for that I apologise ' This idea that Refs have to work their way up from Parks Football is wrong. It is a professional role in a professional business. Referees should have played the game at a professional level. Many players slip out of the game in their mid 20's due to niggling injuries or just lack of opportunity and we should recruit referees from that pool of talent.
Like many others, I think that referees should have to attend a post-match interview just like the managers have to!
What pool of talent? Refereeing is not just about being in good shape and knowing the rules of football. Perhaps Joey Barton should retrain seeing as he's currently slipped out of the game. A ref requires good communication skills, quick decision making, integrity, self-confidence, leadership skills, etc. Police hostage negotiators are good at many of those things, perhaps we should teach them to run?
I don't see how referees learn any of that on Eaton Park - in fact I think Players learn more of those necessary skills as a Professional Footballer. At least having played the game an ex-player is less likely to be conned by players. The vast majority of Managers and Coaches play the game and then have to take their Coaching Badges to become a Manager or a Coach. Why can't ex-players take their Referee Badges after leaving the game and become a referee?
Usually because even the lowest tier players earn more than professional ref's, so good idea but it isn't going to happen!
Usually because by the time they retire they're too shot to run about for 90 minutes at PL pace. Why retire early to be paid comparative peanuts, stay as a player until you can't do it anymore then pundit/coach/manager. It's a great idea especially if they haven't managed to make it bog as a player but I suppose they keep playing & trying because of the riches involved
Most probably because they've witnessed the amount of sh1t refs get from players - not to mention fans and the media - and have quite reasonably decided that they don't want any of that coming their way. Also as others have said the financial lure just isn't there for ex-players, as sad as that sounds.
